The SA Tipstar competition in the SA All Star Series will be decided with the running of the R1-million Canon Gold Cup at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday. A few of the country's media tipsters in line for a share of the R100 000 prize money.
The “Star” series of competitions for owners, trainers, jockeys and the media tipsters are offering a total of R700 000 in prize money and the outright winners of the Turfstar competition for horses and the Topstar competition for jockeys has already been decided.
Ilha Da Vitoria has won the Topstar competition and her owner, Mary Slack, will receive R400 000 with her trainer, Mike De Kock receiving R100 000.
Anton Marcus is unbeatable on 135 points in the Topstar competition and will receive the R60 000 first prize but there is still a fight on for second and third place for the balance of the R100 000 prize. Weichong Marwing has 58 points, Jeff Lloyd 54 points and Kevin Shea 53 points. Shea is out of the running as he is now riding in Mauritius Mark Khan is next with 52 points and Karl Neisius is on 50 points.
The Canon Gold Cup will decide which of these riders gets the R30 000 second prize and who will take the R10 000 for finishing third.
With 24 points available on the Canon Gold Cup, the Tipstar competition is still open. The Sporting Post heads the table with 320 points from Damian Patterson of the Pretoria News in second place on 306 points.
Viv Grebe of the Weekend Post has 304, Etienne Louw of Beeld 300, Magic Lips of Winning Form 292 and Hannes Schoeman of Kaapse Son 290.
Sporting Post looks set to take the main prize of R60 000 but the two other prizes could go to won by any of those mentioned above.
