The Breeders Cup 2003 was dominated by Northern Dancer, seven (including a dead heat) of the eight races were won by offspring of the two most successful male lines in North America. Kris S, a son of Roberto, was represented by his fifth winner in a banner year for the late stallion. Another deceased sire, Pleasant Colony, was the sire of the Classic winner, Pleasantly Perfect, representing the Ribot male line. Pleasantly Perfect is out of Prix Morny winner, Regal State-an Affirmed half sister to multiple group one winner Seven Springs-dam of Distant View-sire of beaten Distaff favourite Sightseek.

The outstanding broodmare, Darshaan, was represented by two winners on the day in that capacity. His daughter L’Ancresse also ran second in the Breeders Cup Fillies and Mares Turf to his maternal granddaughter Islington-beating another granddaughter, Yesterday, into third.
High Chaparral, the first horse to win the Turf twice, (in a dead heat), was the second winner as broodmare sire for the 1984 Prix du Jockey Club winner.

Sadler’s Wells become the most successful sire in Breeders Cup history. Coolmore’s legend has now been represented by five individual winners of six races. Kris S is a win behind with five winners of five races.

Another recently deceased sire, Honor Grades, (by Danzig), achieved his first win in the Breeders Cup when Adoration won the Distaff in an upset result. He is the fifth son of Danzig to be successful in the Breeders Cup. Danzig himself is represented by four winners of five races. Adoration is second Distaff winner produced by a Key To The Mint mare, following Inside Information in 1995.

Halfbridled became the third winner of a Breeders Cup race for late sire Unbridled, following Juvenile winners Anees and Unbridled’s Song. Unbridled is a grandson of Mr Prospector.
Out of a Deputy Minister mare, Unbridled’s son Unbridled’s Song is already represented by a winner, in Unbridled Elaine.  Deputy Minister has three winners- two Fillies winners in Go For Wand and Open Mind and 1998 Classic hero, Awesome Again. He is also grandsire of another Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner in Silverbulletday.

Celtic Swing is another grandson of Mr Prospector via Damister. He was represented by his first representative and winner through Mile heroine, Six Perfections. Out of a Riverman mare, Six Perfections became the third filly to take the race following close relative Miesque (87,88) and Ridgewood Pearl (95).

Cajun Beat was the first BC winner for hot young sire Grand Slam-himself second in the 1998 BC Sprint- when taking the Sprint. Out of a Cure The Blues mare, Cajun Beat is continuing the success of the Gone West sire line in the Breeders Cup. Gone West represented by dual Mile winner Da Hoss and Turf dead heater Johar, also had BC Sprint runner up Mr Greeley.

The Fillies and Mare Turf was won by Islington, a daughter of Sadler’s Wells. Sadler’s Wells’ champion sire son El Prado, was represented by Classic runner up-for the second time, Medaglia D’Oro. Other offspring by Sadler’s Wells to win at the Breeders Cup include In The Wings, Barathea, Northern Spur and High Chaparral.
Another daughter, Yesterday, ran third. Sadler’s Wells is also broodmare sire of Breeders Cup Mile hero Sillic.

Action This Day was Kris S’ fifth winner in the Juvenile and his second Juvenile success following Brocco in 1993. He is the first BC winner to be produced by a Trempolino mare. Kris S’s Distaff winner, Hollywood Wildcat, produced Mile winner War Chant.
