CAPOTE RETIRED

The champion two year old colt of 1986, Capote, has been retired. The stallion had been standing at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky before neurological and fertility problems forced his retirement from stud duties at age 19.

Named champion two year old following his success in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Capote defeated a strong field in the Juvenile with the likes of future champions Alysheba and Gulch well beaten. The likes of Bet Twice and Polish Navy were further back.

Capote was a disappointment in his three year old campaign making ten starts for a third placing. He was originally retired to Calumet Farm where he stood his first season in 1988. Following the beleaguered farm’s financial woes, Capote was moved to Three Chimneys Farm in 1993 where he stood alongside his sire, Seattle Slew, until the latter’s death last year.

Sire of 52 stakes winners from 13 crops, Capote was known as a solid sire, rather than a spectacular one. His finest moment came in the 1996 Breeders Cup Juvenile when sons Boston Harbor and Acceptable fought out the finish to give their sire a 1-2. Boston Harbor was later named champion two year old colt. This success earned Capote title of champion sire of two year olds.

Capote also sired Group/Grade 1 winners Capote Belle, Matty G, Lambent Light, Surfing Home and La Spia. This season he is represented by the multiple stakes winner Capuccino. He is the broodmare sire of Haskell Invitational winner Dixie Union and the highclass filly, Roar Emotion, winner of the Demoiselle Stakes.
