At a meeting of industry stakeholders on Wednesday 3 August 2005, Horseracing South Africa (Pty) Ltd, trading as Racing South Africa, was formed to look after matters of national and international interest. The racing operators, owners and breeders own the company in equal third shares and the following were appointed as Directors to the Board:

In so doing, Racing South Africa has absorbed the functions of the South African Horse Import & Export Council and Kenilworth Quarantine Station (Pty) Ltd. Its priority, therefore, remains the development of a sustainable delivery system for the movement of horses in and out of South Africa. Racing South Africa will also fund and direct the management of the South African Equine Trade Council (SAETRAC) and the Equine Research Centre.

SAETRAC was recently awarded membership of the Association of Export Councils that functions under the auspices of the Department of Trade & Industry. As a result, SAETRAC will retain its Section 21 status under its own Chairman and will, on a matching grant basis, receive funding from the DTI.

Founded in 1990, the Equine Research Centre (ERC) was established to provide scientific and veterinary services to the horseracing and breeding industry. Originally funded (in part) by the Highveld Racing Authority, its functions were absorbed by the Racing Trust when Phumelela Gaming and Leisure (Pty) Ltd was listed. Racing South Africa’s shareholding offered the ERC an improved system of funding and it was recently agreed that a Board of Trustees would direct its management. The Board comprises:

Peter Gibson was appointed CEO of Racing South Africa and SAETRAC and will be assisted by Mrs Claudie Naidoo who has considerable experience with the DTI.
