THE KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH DIAMOND STAKES OF 2005 By Sarah Whitelaw |
|
The 2005 race is somewhat lackluster due to the absence of
several of the seasons better horses. It is still an interesting
race and several horses are looking to redeem their reputations.
ACE: Runner up in the Prince of Wales Stakes last time out, beaten comfortably by Azamour. He is lightly raced, winning his first three starts, before running fifth to Rakti at Ascot last year. His form has been solid, being placed behind Grey Swallow and Bago since. He is a three parts brother to Restructure and as a son of Danehill will no doubt be a sought after stallion prospect. AZAMOUR: Top class colt, he was workmanlike when winning the Prince of Wales Stakes. As a triple group one winner he looks the one to beat although there are stamina doubts surrounding him. As a winner of both the St James Palace Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes he is a class act. The horse to beat. BAGO: Last year's Arc hero has won just once this season and was bitterly disappointing when a well beaten third behind Alkaased last time out at Saint-Cloud. He is yet to run unplaced in twelve starts to date although he has ground to find with Grey Swallow. He is too classy to ignore although he has yet to win a race outside of France. DOYEN: Last year's brilliant winner has yet to place in a race since. His connections are doubtful of his improving enough to win a race of this caliber. FIGHT YOUR CORNER: High class staying colt. He won the Henry II Stakes impressively two starts back and didn't seem to stay the extra distance of the Gold Cup when unplaced behind Westerner. On his previous form he looks to be somewhat outclassed in this company. A son of Mutharram, he is from the family of Inchinor and has won six of 18 starts. GAMUT: A most impressive winner of the Princess of Wales Stakes last time out when crushing multiple stakes winner Day Flight by eight lengths. High class colt, he is a previous winner of the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud. Well beaten in this race by Doyen last year, his trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, has won this race in 2002 with another Spectrum colt, Golan. He has won six of 17 starts for Ballymacoll. GREY SWALLOW: A convincing winner of the Tattersalls Gold Cup last time, he had Bago and Azamour well beaten on that occasion. The latter looked unlucky although as the Gold Cup's terms are the same as here Grey Swallow should be right there. The best son of Daylami, he is a half brother to Saturday's International Stakes winner Moonlight Dance. Last year's Irish Derby winner has won five of nine starts to date. He is another who is yet to win outside of his native country. MUBTAKER: Lightly raced eight year old. He has yet to recapture the form which saw him run second to Dalakhani in the Arc two years ago and seems to have a myriad of problems. He does love Newbury and has won five of his six starts here. He has run just four times since his gallant run in the 2003 Arc. NORSE DANCER: High class five year old who has yet to win a group one. His last two runs have been most disappointing and he needs to make drastic improvement to feature here. He did win the Earl of Sefton Stakes earlier in the year and judged on his past best form could run into the money if he returns to his best form. He run both Azamour and the now retired Sulamani close last year and would have a squeak on that form. He has won four of 25 starts. PHOENIX REACH: Was second last time out in the Singapore Cup last time out. The third home that day, Alexander Goldrun, has since a won a group one-albeit against weaker. Phoenix Reach was a doubtful starter a few days ago but Andrew Balding seems to have got the injury prone entire back to peak fitness. A group/grade one winner in three countries he has yet to win a big one in his native homeland. Jockey Martin Dwyer is extremely confident about the handsome bay's chances and he has won over the course and distance. He has won five of 13 races to date. POLICY MAKER: Cost his connections 60,000 pounds to supplement.
Second in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud last time out, the son
of Sadler's Wells is a close relation of Peintre Celebre. RAZKALLA: Ran a close second to Phoenix Reach in the Dubai Sheema Classic. He has been well beaten since and doesn't look to have the class to win here. A multiple stakes winner, he is by the late Caerleon out of a group one placed Sadler's Wells mare, Larrocha. This is the red hot family of Royal Highness and Scorpion. A former handicapper, he has won six of 18. WARRSAN: Dual Coronation Cup has not quite been at his best since winning a group one race in Germany a year ago. He was well beaten in both the Coronation Cup and Prince of Wales Stakes. THE GEEZER: He was fancied for the Derby following running second to Motivator in the Dante Stakes. He was unplaced at Epsom. He was then third to Plea Bargain at York before running winning a Listed race. The Geezer takes a jump in class but if he reproduces his Dante form can run into the money. He is one of two runners for David Elsworth and both are sons of Halling. ESWARAH: The unbeaten Epsom Oaks winner. She is the least experienced runner in the field having made just three starts and also has yet to face colts. The last filly to win the King George was the late Time Charter. Two of her three wins have come at Newbury and she is clearly a classy filly. The Epsom Oaks form, however, is not working out well.
