Shadwell Stud, who lost their outstanding sire Unfuwain a few months ago, suffered a further loss with the death of Unfuwain’s half brother, Nashwan.

The son of champions Blushing Groom and Height Of Fashion was 16.

Once beaten in his career, Nashwan carried all before him as a three year old having run and won twice at two. He won the English 2000 Guineas defeating Group/Grade 1 winners Exbourne, Danehill and Markofdistinction.

The Dick Hern trainee then went on to pulverize Terimon, subsequent winner of the Juddmonte International, in the Epsom Derby. Ridden by Willie Carson, throughout his career, Nashwan then went on to win the Eclipse Stakes by five lengths defeating all of Opening Verse, Indian Skimmer and Warning.

Nashwan was then a brave winner of the King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes from the high class Cacoethes. Further back was the Arc hero Carroll House.

He suffered his sole career loss at his final start. He was beaten in the Prix Niel by subsequent Japan Cup winner Golden Pheasant to whom he was conceding 7lb.

Retiring to Shadwell Stud, Nashwan enjoyed a degree of success at stud, if not reaching quite the heights hoped for him. His best offspring included dual King George And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes winner Swain and champion turf mare, Wandesta. Other Group 1 winners by Nashwan include Aqaarid, Nadia and One So Wonderful.
