THE premier race in the Western Cape, the J&B
Met, will carry a stake of R1,5-million when it is run over 2 000 metres
at the spectacular Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Saturday,
January 31, 2004.
Guinness UDV, sponsors of the famous event for the
past 26 years, and Gold Circle Racing, which stages the exciting
Summer Season feature filled programme in the Western Cape,
"Africa's International Destination", have announced the 50%
increase in the stake from R1-million to R1,5-million.
Also included on the day will be the R300 000 Cape
Flying Championship, Grade 1, which will bring the 11 race
programme to include three Grade 1 and one Grade 2 feature events.
The J&B Met Raceday is the highlight of the
social calendar in the Western Cape and, for the past few years, the
glamour and glitz of the occasion and the attraction of the best thoroughbred
horses in South Africa, have drawn crowds in excess of 50 000.
The race is one of the big three on the country’s
racing calendar along with the R1,5-million Vodacom Durban July and the
Gomma Gomma Summer Cup. It has been won by many of the greatest horses
to compete on the country’s tracks.
