The pace is hotting up as the R2,5 million Vodacom Durban
July draws nearer. The trainers are puting the finishing touches
to their charges for Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event,
to be run at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, 7 July 2007.
Cape trainer Basil Marcus is very happy with the progress
that his dual Classic winner Jay Peg is making in his preparation
towards next Saturday’s Vodacom Durban July. Big race jockey
Jeff Lloyd has been riding him in the mornings and is also
very happy with him.
Marcus was delighted when Jay Peg drew stall number two.
The three-year-old colt who has won eight out of his 12
starts has enjoyed extraordinary luck with draws, getting
stall 1, 3, 2, 4, 1, 3 and now 2 in his last 7 ballots.
Marcus said that when horses are drawn wide in the July
they try to get a better position in the race creating a
slightly faster pace than usual. He added that the way the
draws have been spread this year makes it quite difficult
to predict the pace.
However, he said it does not really concern him as he has
a top jockey aboard who will be able to judge what type
of race it is going to be and place Jay Peg accordingly.
Marcus does not have any concerns about Jay Peg staying
the trip.
