The five-year-old Goldmark gelding, Laredo Gold, and the three-year-old
Kilconnel gelding, Longford, who fought out the finish of the
Open Handicap over 1 000 metres at Greyville on Saturday, have
been added to the list of entries for South Africa’s top weight-for-age
speed contest, the R400 000, Grade 1 Mercury Sprint.
The race will take place over 1 200 metres at Clairwood in
Durban on Saturday, July 16 and with Black Skimmer, Something
Else and Play Catch also being supplemented, the entry list
for the race has been increased to 22.
Laredo Gold won the first race on the card at Saturday’s Vodacom
Durban July meeting at Greyville and gave trainer Mike Bass
the first of four winners at the meeting including the Vodacom
Durban July itself.
