CHAMPION SIRE, ROY, DIES

Roy, champion sire in both Argentina and Chile, has died of a respiratory problem. He was standing at Haras La Esperanza in Argentina.

The sire of over 100 stakes winners, he topped the sires list nine times in Chile.

He also stood at Darby Dan for four years before being sold to Argentina - where he topped the sires list twice.

Responsible for Horse of the Year Freddy, he was also the sire of India Divina, Cagney, Velvet Green, Val Gardena, Cremcaramel and champion Candidato Roy.

Another daughter, Madame Pietra, accounted for top class mare, Bear Fan, when winning the Desert Stormer Handicap.

Placed in the Sanford Stakes at two, Roy won three of 17 starts. A son of top sire, Fappiano, his dam Ad Libber was a daughter of Never Bend. He was a descendent of Frizette - like his grandsire, Mr Prospector.
