Sunday Silence may have have time off from stud duty this year, but the demand for his progeny remains as high as ever. Japan’s perennial champion sire had another big sale at this year’s Select Sale in Japan on the 8 and 9 of July. 

On the first day of the sale, Sunday Silence foals fetched the three highest prices. His dark bay son out of Lancashire Oaks winner, Fanjica, by Law Society out of a granddaughter of Arc heroine Ivanjica, fetched 1,708,333 USDollars ( 205,000 Yen). The session’s top lot was purchased by Genichiro Tawara.

Another colt, out of Catalyst, fetched over a million dollars. The colt was bought by Richi Kondo at $1,125,000 (135,000 Yen)

Sunday Silence’s third highest lot on Day 1 was another colt, this time a half brother to Japanese Derby winner Fusaichi Concorde.

The colt was bought for  916,666 USDollars (110,000 Yen) by Kiyoshi Nishikawa. The colt is from of the more successful family of recent  years and is the same family of Street Cry and highly promising sire, Spectrum. 

The sire outside of Japan to make the most impact on day one was Fusiachi Pegasus. The first foals of the 2000 Kentucky Derby winner were highly sought after. On Day 1, a colt out of a half sister to champion Chief’s Crown - the Seattle Slew mare Jeweled Crown, fetched 675,000 USDollars (81,000 Yen).

The colt was bought by John McCormack Bloodstock. Another son of Ashford’s resident sire was sold for 708,333 USDollars (85,000 Yen), produced by Prix Vermeille winner Queen Maud, he was bought by Hiroyoshi Usuda. 

On Day 2 it was another Sunday Silence colt, who topped proceedings. The full brother to leading young sire Dance In The Dark, who was produced by Nijinsky II mare, Dancing Key. The youngster, who hails from Arazi, Ajdal and Formidable’s family, was sold for USDollars $2,791,666 (335,000 Yen). He was bought by Takaya Shimakawa.

Three other Sunday Silence colts sold for over a million dollars. These included colts out of the high class See You Soon, a daughter of leading broodmare sire Kaldoun, who was sold for 150,000 Yen to Kiyoshi Nishikawa. A son of English 1000 Guineas heroine, Las Meninas, was sold for 135,000 Yen to the same buyer.

The last million dollar colt was out of another Kaldoun mare, in Aubergade. Purchased for 120,000 Yen, the youngster is from the family of Cape Verdi and Arcangues. 

Other sires to have good sales include El Condor Pasa and Brian’s Time.

The Japan Cup hero sold a three parts brother to grade 1 winner Strategic Manuever (dam of speedy Ishiguru) for 60,000 Yen (500,000 USDollars).   

Brian’s Time is one of Japan’s more consistent sires. His colt out of Bound To Dance was purchased for 60,000 Yen ($500,000 dollars). The colt comes from the family of champion Anees and was bought by Nakamura Chikusan.
