TIPSTAR COMPETITION 2004 BEGINS

Media Release
01 November 2004

Racing tipsters throughout South Africa will begin their bids to become the country’s star tipster next month when the Gomma Gomma Summer Cup takes place at Turffontein Racecourse on November 27.

The R2-million race will herald the start of the R100 000 Tipstar competition for print media tipsters sponsored by Gold Circle and Phumelela and contested over the 28 races that make up the qualifying events in the All Star Series held in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

This will be the second competition of its kind, the first having been staged last season on all graded races run throughout the country. It was won by Charl Pretorius of the Racing Express with Johan Stassen of the EP Herald second and Damian Patterson of the Pretoria News third.

The competition requires participating tipsters to select the horses to fill the first three official places in the specific races. Points will be allocated on the following basis 10 for first, six for second and four for third, where the predictions match the result of the race.

In cases where selected runners finish in the first three but not in the positions as predicted, two bonus points will be awarded.

At the end of the season, the three tipsters earning the most points will receive cheques of R60 000, R30 000 and R10 000 for finishing first, second and third respectively.
