WORLD CUP HERO IS
RETIRED

Godolphin’s Dubai World Cup winner, Street Cry, has been retired to stud. The four year old son of Machiavellian will stand at Jonabell alongside champions Cherokee Run and Holy Bull, as well as the A.P. Indy horse, Old Trieste.

Street Cry, who was the warm favourite for the Breeders Cup Classic, suffered a recurrence of ankle problems which prevented him from running in last year’s Kentucky Derby.

This is another setback for Godolphin, who have had a frustrating year.

Street Cry was a high class two year old, whose finest run came when third in the Breeders Cup Juvenile behind champions Macho Uno and Point Given. Touted as a leading Kentucky Derby candidate, the colt won the UAE Guineas (from Group 1 winners Noverre and Count Dubois). Street Cry was then second in the UAE Derby to stablemate, Express Tour. Beaten just a head, Street Cry had the smart Lido Palace six lengths behind in third.

Injury intervened and forced him to the sidelines. He resurfaced months later to run second to the useful Evening Attire in the Discovery Handicap.

It was as a four year old that the handsome bay finally fulfilled his promise. His five length thrashing of a field which included champion Sakhee in the World Cup was a scintillating performance. Under Jerry Bailey, the colt took the lead at the top of the stretch and drew clear in a performance similar to Dubai Millennium.

Street Cry was sent to the USA and on his first start won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap. This was another fluent win over the smart performers Dollar Bill and Congaree.

His final start came in the Whitney Handicap. In a strong field he ran slightly below par when second to the brilliant, also retired, Left Bank.

Street Cry has a pedigree to back up his racing talent. By leading sire Machiavellian, represented this season by the successful young sire Titus Livius, he is out of the Irish Oaks heroine Helen Street. She is a daughter of Derby winner Troy (also damsire of Pilsudski and Oath). This is the outstanding family of Sun Princess, Petrushka, Millenary and leading young sire Spectrum.

No fee has been set.
