The South African All Star Series for 2005-2006 is over and between them, one owner, one trainer and four members of the racing media have won R700 000 for their efforts during the season.
The R1-million Canon Gold Cup at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday was the final event in the series and owner-breeder Mrs Mary Slack received her R400 000 prize as owner of Ilha Da Vitoria who earned 48 points in the Turfstar competition. Trainer Mike de Kock, who prepared the mare, won R100 000.
Second place on 36 points was National Colour with Elusive Fort on 31 points finishing third.
The Topstar competition for jockeys was won by Anton Marcus who scored a massive 135 points to claim the R60 000 first prize in this category followed by Jeff Lloyd who managed 66 points to receive R30 000 and Weichong Marwing who received R10 000 for his 62 points.
The Tipstar competition was dominated in recent months by the Sporting Post. Their tipsters scored 334 points to take the R60 000 first prize followed in second on 314 points by Damian Patterson of the Pretoria News. He received R30 000.
The competition for the placings went down to the wire and after the running of the Canon Gold Cup Viv Greybe of Weekend Post and Etienne Louw of Beeld each had 310 points to share the third prize and take home R5 000 each.
Another competition has been running during the season and that has been for trainers and jockeys in the KwaZulu-Natal Bookmakers Get Out Stakes.
The competition has been run on the last race of the day at non-feature events in KwaZulu-Natal with points being awarded relative to the finishing positions of the horses.
The competition for the trainers has been won for the second year running by Dennis Drier who earned 49.5 points and received the R30 000 first prize. Duncan Howells received R15 000 for his 46 points in second place and Selvan Moodley scored 27 points for the R5 000 third prize.
In the jockey competition Jeff Lloyd finished third on 40 points to win R5 000, Robbie Hill managed 47.5 points for the R15 000 second prize and Sean Cormack emerged the winner on 55 points to take the R30 000 first prize.
