THE BREEDERS CUP OF 2006
3 November 2006
By Sarah Whitelaw

This year's Breeders Cup promises to be one for the ages. To be run at Churchill Downs, the races kick off at 7:30 pm (SA time) with the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies the first of the eight Gr1 races.

BREEDERS CUP JUVENILE FILLIES

Adhrhythm : 2 f Adhocracy – Relic Rhythm, by Prospector's Halo

Has top-class form in Florida, winning three of her five starts and running second twice, including the My Dear Girl Stakes, by nearly five lengths, and Susan's Girl Stakes.

Appealing Zophie: 2 f Successful Appeal - Zophie, by Hawkster

Winner of the Spinaway Stakes (Gr1) and second in the Mountaineer Juvenile Stakes. She was unplaced in the Alciabiades Stakes (Gr2) behind Bel Air Beauty, but may not have liked the Polytrack at Keeneland. In an extremely open race, she has a chance. Like Afleet Alex she is out of a mare by world record breaker Hawkster.

Bel Air Beauty: 2 f Smart Strike – Awe That, by Boundary

She won the Alciabiades Stakes (Gr2) as a maiden at nearly 50-1, beating the Sorrento Stakes (Gr3) winner Untouched Talent (Storm Cat), with the likes of Appealing Zophie, Her Majesty and She's Included further back. With plenty of upsets coming over Keeneland's Polytrack surface, it is difficult to know whether or not this form will stand up.

Cash Included: 2 f Include – Henderson Band, by Chimes Band

The likely favourite. She was most impressive when winning the Oak Leaf Stakes (Gr1) over Gr1 winner Point Ashley. On that occasion she had Point Ashley nearly five lengths behind her and the latter had just won the Del Mar Debutante Stakes. From the first crop of her sire, two of the last three winners of the Oak Leaf have gone on to won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. She is from the family of Fahal.

Cotton Blossom: 2 f Broken Vow – For Dixie, by Dixieland Band

Winner of the Schuylerville Stks (Gr2), she was also second in the Spinaway Stakes when over five lengths behind Appealing Zophie and fourth in the Alciabiades, three lengths back.

The third filly in the Schuylerville, has since won a stakes race.

She is one of a record breaking 18 horses trained by Todd Pletcher who have been entered in the Breeders Cup. She has won two of her five starts.

Dreaming of Anna: 2 f Rahy – Justenuffheart, by Broad Brush

Unbeaten in her three starts to date, she was most impressive when winning the Summer Stks (Gr2) last time out over the colts. The runner up, Marcavelly, was beaten this weekend in a stakes race, but Dreaming of Anna, was visually most impressive. She has been working very well and maybe the one to beat in an open race. She is out of a stakes winning half-sister to Kitten's Joy. She is very versatile, having won on both dirt and turf.

Gatorize: 2 f Exploit – Cayman Agressor, by Citidancer

Won her first two starts and then ran fifth, as an outsider, in the Alcibiades from a wide draw. The Polytrack form is best watched as it is hard to say how true it is.

Her Majesty: 2 f Giant's Causeway – Slide, by Smarten

Beautifully bred, her dam is a half-sister to Breeders Cup Sprint winner Safely Kept. Was third in the Alciabiades last time out, from draw 13, beaten just over three lengths by Bel Air Beauty. Trained by Patrick Biacone, the Alciabiades was just her second start so she may well have improvement to come.

Octave: 2 f Unbridled's Song – Belle Nuit, by Dr Carter

Another superbly bred filly, she is a half-sister to top-class filly Belle Cherie.

She won the Adirondack Stakes (Gr2) easily before finishing a joint second in the Matron Stakes behind Meadow Breeze, a non runner here.

Quick Little Miss : 2 f Freud – Swift Girl, by Unbridled

Third in the Oak Leaf Stakes, beaten nine lengths by Cash Included. Hard to fancy on that run, she previously won the Barretts Debutante Stakes. She has won one of her five starts for trainer Mel Stute.

Satulagi: 2 f Officer – Shawganty, by Danzig Connection

The only British runner. A stakes winner in Britain, where she won the Winkfield Stakes (Listed). From the first crop of her sire, whose made such a good start to his stud career, Satulagi has run behind some of the best of her generation. She run her best race last time out when fourth in the Fillies Mile behind the top-class Simply Perfect.

Her trainer, Stan Moore, has enjoyed a good year with his juveniles and Satulagi is a very consistent filly, without being top-class. She has won two of her nine starts.

She's Included: 2 f Include – Dancingonince, by Robyn Dancer

Another from the first crop of Pimlico Special (Gr1) winner Include. She ran a very good third in the Del Mar Debutante (Gr1) behind the much hyped Point Ashley. She's Included then ran seven lengths back in the Alciabiades, although she could improve with a return to the main track. She has won just once in four starts.

Sutra: 2 f Meadowlake – Desert Liaison, by Woodman

Bids to give her sire his second winner of this race. She won the Frizette Stakes (Gr1) in good style last time out over a field which included Our Fantene, Matron winner Meadow Breeze and the well regarded Awesome Ashley. On that occasion she had Lily Carson well held in third. She has won two of her three starts and was second in the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (Gr3).

Lilly Carson : 2 f Carson City – Golden Lilly, by Deputy Minister

She scrapes into the final field due to the scratching of Untouched Talent. She has won once and was third in the Frizette on only her second start. Her second dam is the top-class filly Lilly Capote, who ran fifth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies of her year.

BESSEMER TRUST BREEDERS CUP JUVENILE COLTS

C P West: 2 c Came Home – Queen's Legend, by Dynaformer

Has run just twice, winning once and running second to King of the Roxy in the Futurity Stakes (Gr2) last time out. Trained by Nick Zito, his second dam is by Hawaii and he is from the family of Damascus.

Circular Quay: 2 c Thunder Gulch – Circle of Light, by Belong To Me

Top-class two-year-old, he was second to Great Hunter in the Lane's End Breeders Futurity (Gr1) last time out. Previously had won the Hopeful Stakes (Gr1) in most impressive fashion, coming from well off them, to easily beat stable companion Scat Daddy. The latter franked the form by winning the Champagne Stakes (Gr1) next time out. Previously won the Bashford Manor Stakes (Gr3). The horse to beat.

Got the Last Laugh: 2 c Distorted Humor – Theresa's Tizzy, by Cee's Tizzy

Winner of the Arlington Washington Futurity (Gr3) when he dead heated with Officer Rocket. He was fifth in the Champagne Stakes next time out when beaten over 13 lengths by Scat Daddy. He has won two of three. His dam was a top-class race filly, who won over $500,000. He is trained by Bill Mott.

Great Hunter: 2 c Aptitude – Zenith, by Roy

Regarded as a bridesmaid before his last start where he won the Lane's End Breeders Futurity on the Polytrack. Previously he was second in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (Gr3) to the sidelined E Z Warrior, second in the Best Pal Stakes (Gr3) behind Principle Secret and second in the Del Mar Futurity to Horse Greeley. His trainer, Doug O'Neil, won this race last year with Stevie Wonderboy.

King of the Roxy: Littleexpectations – Marrakesh, by Bold Forbes

Winner of the Futurity Stakes (Gr2) last time out beating C P West. He was previously second in the Saratoga Special (Gr3). He is one of three runners for Todd Pletcher, whose runners could well dominate this race. King of the Roxy, owned by Team Valor, has won two of his four starts.

Malt Magic : 2 c Cherokee Run – La Cucina, by Last Tycoon

A full brother to former Arkansas Derby winner Sir Cherokee. His trainer, Bob Baffert, won this race with Vindication and trained another Cherokee Run colt, Kafwain, to run second in the same race. This colt had a bad start last time when sixth in the Norfolk Stakes behind Stormello. He is rated highly by connections and can improve on his record of one win in four starts.

Pegasus Wind: 2 c Fusaichi Pegasus – Ride the Wind, by Meadowlake

Third last time out in the Champagne Stakes, when beaten just over a length by Scat Daddy and the promising Nobiz like Showbiz. Always highly rated by D Wayne Lukas, he made his debut in the Bashford Manor Stakes (Gr3) and was three and a half lengths off Circular Quay, beating subsequent stakes winner Chace City. After breaking his maiden by seven lengths, he ran fourth in the Hopeful Stakes, beaten nearly nine lengths by Circular Quay. Lukas has won the Juvenile five times previously.

Principle Secret: 2 c Sea of Secrets – Beright, by Gray Slewpy

This unfashionably bred colt won his first two starts including the Best Pal Stakes (Gr3). In the latter race he accounted for subsequent graded winners Great Hunter and Stormello. He was beaten by the latter colt when second in the Norfolk Stakes. When winning his maiden he defeated Horse Greeley, who went on to win the Del Mar Futurity (Gr2).

Scat Daddy: 2 c Johannesburg – Love Style, by Mr Prospector

Top-class colt, he has won three of his four starts. His only loss came behind Circular Quay in the Hopeful Stakes, where he was well beaten by his stable companion. He made up for the defeat by winning the Champagne Stakes over Nobiz Like Showbiz and Pegasus Wind. Prior to the Hopeful, he won the Sanford Stakes.

Skip Code: 2 c Skip Away – Heavenly Note, by Sunny's Halo

Top-class Canadian colt. He won the Grey Breeders Cup Stakes (Gr3) in good style last time out. The Grey is one of Canada's biggest races for two-year-olds, although the record of Canadians in the Breeders Cup Juvenile is poor. He has won two of four starts to date and is highly rated by connections. This will be his biggest task to date and he will need to improve.

Stormello: 2 c Stormy Atlantic – Wilshewed, by Lyphard

Winner of the Norfolk Stakes last time out, reversing the form with Principle Secret, who had previously beaten him in the Best Pal Stakes. In the Norfolk, Stormello beat his rival by a neck, whilst the Best Pal saw Principle Secret have more than five lengths on Stormello. He also ran a good third in the Del Mar Futurity, beaten just over a length by runner up and subsequent Gr1 winner Great Hunter.

Teuflesberg: 2 c Johannesburg – St Michele, by Devil's Bag

Runner up in the Sanford Stakes behind Scat Daddy. This was by far and away the best form he has shown to date. There was only a neck between him and Scat Daddy in the Sanford Stakes, but he was beaten over 20 lengths last time out in the Breeders Futurity. He has won just once in eight starts and is an outsider here.

U D Ghetto: 2 g Honour and Glory – Legend of Seattle, by Silver Hawk

Winner of the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Stakes Gr3 beating good colt Shermanesque by a length and a quarter. The third horse, Son of the West, is very highly regarded.

Shermanesque was third in the Saratoga Special, albeit beaten over seven lengths. He has won two of four starts and bids to follow Vindication in winning the Kentucky Cup Juvenile and Breeders Cup Juvenile double.

EMIRATES AIRLINE BC FILLY AND MARE TURF

Dancing Edie : 4 f Moscow Ballet – Duchess of Ack, by Slewpy

A well beaten second behind Wait a While last time out in the Yellow Ribbon. On that occasion she was nearly five lengths off the grey dynamo. Bids to give her trainer his second Breeders Cup winner. A consistent filly, she has finished in the money in 10 of her 15 starts, with her biggest win coming in the John C Mabee Hcp, where she narrowly defeated the now retired Moscow Burning. She was also a good second, beaten under two lengths, in the Gamely Breeders Cup Hcp (Gr1), behind Shining Energy.

Film Maker: 6 m Dynaformer – Miss du Bois, by Mr Prospector

An outstanding turf performer, she has been placed in this race in the last two years. A winner of over $1.7 million, she has won six graded races including the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (Gr1). Whilst there can be no denying her class, she has met Ouija Board twice and both times been beaten by that outstanding mare. She bids to make a winning swansong, as this is to be her final race.

Germance: 3 f Silver Hawk – Gaily Tiara, by Caerleon

She had outstanding form in France, where she won five of her first six starts, including the Prix Saint Alary (Gp1). She was also second in the French Oaks behind Confidential Lady. Made favourite for her North American debut, Germance was well beaten by the brilliant Vacare in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (Gr1). Mauralaka and Quiet Royal both finished ahead of her on that occasion.

Honey Ryder: 5 m Lasting Approval – Cuando Quiere, by Affirmed

Gives Todd Pletcher a strong hand in this race, Pletcher also being represented by Wait A While. Was a game winner of the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes last time out, beating Film Maker a head. It should be close between the two of them again. A model of consistency, Honey Ryder, who won last year's E P Taylor Stakes, she has been in the money in 20 of her 26 starts. The winner of over $1.8 million, Honey Ryder has won over all types of going.

Mauralakana: 3 f Muhtathir – Jimkana, by Double Bed

Out of an own sister to globe trotter Jim and Tonic. She was a good second

last time out behind the unbeaten Vacare in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. A high-class two-year-old in France last year, she has won just once this year but ran two lengths back in the French 1000 Guineas and was sixth in the French Oaks. Prior to her QE II run, she was third to Karen's Caper in a Gr3 race. Karen's Caper came out next time and was just beaten by the outstanding filly Gorella, a leading fancy for the Mile.

My Typhoon: 4 f Giant's Causeway – Urban Sea, by Miswaki

A very consistent filly, she has yet to win at this level or over this distance. What is in her favour is her trainer Bill Mott, who has a good record in Breeders Cup races. She was third last time out behind the outstanding Gorella in the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, albeit over five lengths back. A multiple graded stakes winner, she won a pair of Gr 2 races this year, the Mint Julep Hcp, and the Ballston Spa Breeders Cup Hcp – beating Gr1 winners Asi Siempre and Sweet Talker.

Ouija Board: 5 m Cape Cross- Selection Board, by Welsh Pageant

An outstanding competitor, she won this race two years ago and was second last year. Despite being the recepient of a few bad rides this year, she is clearly as good as ever. Her most impressive performance this year was slamming a field of top colts in the Prince of Wales Stakes, she also won the Nassau Stakes in game fashion and was unlucky in both the QE II Cup (in Hong Kong) and Eclipse Stakes. The horse to beat, this maybe her swansong although connections are talking about possibly competing in the Japan Cup.

Quiet Royal: 3 f Royal Academy – Wakigoer, by Miswaki

She was third in the QE II Cup, behind Vacare and Mauralakana last time out. A top-class two-year-old, she ran second behind the likes of Confidential Lady and Rumplestiltskin. This year she has yet to win, but has been running in Gp1 races against colts without being disgraced. Following a second in the Prix la Grotte (Gp3), she was beaten three lengths in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and then was second last in the Prix du Moulin.

Satwa Queen: 4 f Muhtathir – Tolga, by Irish River

Ran a great race when second to Mandesha in the Prix de L'Opera (Gp1), beating outstanding filly Alexandrova. Prior to that she won a Gp2 race at Deauville over ten furlongs, beating Gp1 winners Sweet Stream and Red Bloom. Whilst she has yet to win at the highest level, her form suggests she should be competitive here, probably at a good price. Earlier this year she ran second to Irridescence in the Balanchine at Nad Al Sheba.

Wait A While: 3 f Maria's Mon- Flirtatious, by A P Indy

The likely favourite. She has been brilliant since being moved to turf, although her dirt was good. Unbeaten on the turf, Wait A While was scintillating when winning the Yellow Ribbon, her first start against older fillies, last time out. She previously won the American Oaks by over four lengths, the Lake Placid Hcp by nearly five lengths and is clearly going to take some beating. In Ouija Board and Film Maker she faces stern opposition however.

SELECTION

TVG BREEDERS CUP SPRINT

Areyoutalkintome: 5 g Smokester – Andrea Gail, by Storm Bird

Good Cal-bred sprinter, was second last time out behind Kelly's Landing, beaten a length at level weights. Previously he won the Pirate's Bounty Hcp,

He has won nine of his 37 races and over $750,000 and ran third in both the Bay Meadows BC Sprint Hcp (Gr3) and the Pat O'Brien BC Hcp (Gr2).

He is trained by Doug O'Neill, who has had such a successful season.

Attila's Storm: 4 c Forest Wildcat – Sweet Symmetry, by Magestrial

Fourth in last year's race, Attila's Storm suffered a fracture to his leg while finishing third in the Palos Verdes Hcp (Gr2). His last run, when third to Henny Hughes was impressive considering that it was his first run in nine months. He has won four of his 12 starts and ran second in the Malibu (Gr1) to subsequent Golden Sheehan winner Proud Tower Too.

Bordonaro : 5 g Memo – Miss Excitement, by Rajab

Winner of the Ancient Title Hcp (Gr1) last time out over Sheehan runner up Thor's Echo.

A top-class sprinter, he has won three of his four starts this year and was unlucky when narrowly beaten in the Bing Crosby Hcp (Gr1). He easily accounted for Friendly Island when winning the Count Fleet Hcp (Gr3) earlier this year. Lightly raced, the gelding has won nine of 12 starts but faces his toughest task to date.

Friendly Island: 5 h Crafty Friend – Island Queen by Ogygian

Unplaced in the Kelso Hcp (Gr3) last time out but he is best over shorter. Ran a good third behind Pomeroy and War Front in the Forego Handicap at Saratoga, beaten two and a half lengths. Won Gr3 Maryland BC HCp (Gr3) but has yet to win at the highest level. Lightly raced, he has won seven of his 16 starts for Todd Pletcher. He was a good second to Bordonaro in the Count Fleet.

Henny Hughes : 3 c Hennessy – Meadow Flyer, by Meadowlake

The favourite. He is unbeaten in three starts this year. He made an impressive three-year-old debut when winning the Jersey Shore Breeders Cup Hcp (Gr3). His last win in the Vosburgh Stakes was breath taking, beating War Front by nearly three lengths with Attila's Storm further back in third. Prior to that he waltzed away with the King's Bishop Stakes by nearly six lengths. Runner up in last year's Breeders Cup Juvenile, he is the one to beat.

Kelly's Landing: 5 g Patton – Best Game, by Great Above

He broke the track record over Churchill Downs and clearly likes the course. Inconsistent sort, he has won just two of his seven starts this season, but was a good second to the ill fated Lost in the Fog in the Aristides Hcp, a race he won last year.

Following that run he was thrashed by Nightmare Affair in the Smile Sprint Hcp, beaten over four lengths. Pomeroy also finished ahead of the gelding on that occasion.

Lewis Michael: 3 c Rahy – Justenuffheart, by Broad Brush

Own brother to BC Juvenile fillies contender, Dreaming of Anna. A very versatile sort, he has been running on both dirt and turf, and was second last time out in the Perryville Stks (Gr3), beaten nearly five lengths by Midnight Lute. Before that he ran third to Lawyer Ron in the St Louis Derby. Has won just one of his 8 starts this year and is a complete outsider here.

Malibu Mint: 4 f Malibu Moon – Ivory Mint, by Key To The Mint

Top-class filly. She won the Princess Rooney Hcp (Gr1) in impressive fashion by nearly four lengths, defeating the now retired Dubai Escapade. She is yet finish worse than second over six furlongs and ran second in the Winning Colors Hcp at Churchill Downs.

Heavily campaigned, she has already made 10 starts this year, winning three, all of which were stakes races against fillies and mares. She is coming off a good win in the Gr3 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes, where she beat top-class fillies Hide and Chic and Behaving Badly.

Nightmare Affair: 5 h Out of Place – Beau Arts Ball, by Black Tie Affair

Winner of the Smile Sprint Hcp (Gr3) at Calder, beating Pomeroy and Kelly's Landing. It was the fourth win in a row for the horse, who is trained by Manny Azpurura. Nightmare Affair disappointed in the Forego, when beaten nearly five lengths by Pomeroy, but should be right there if he can recapture his earlier form. Has won 11 races and over $800,000.

Pomeroy: 5 h Boundary – Questress, by Seeking the Gold

Bids to go out on a winning note, as he will retire to stud at the end of the season. Known as a Saratoga specialist, Pomeroy has won four graded races including the King's Bishop Stakes and Forego Hcp – both Gr1. He has won seven of 17 starts and is something of a surprise. He was injured during his four-year-old campaign and his then owners sold him as a stud prospect. But he has made something of a comeback. The truth remains that his form away from Saratoga is less than outstanding.

Siren Lure: 5 g Joyeux Danseur – Cantamar, by Gulch

Former claimer who made good. He has been most impressive this year, winning three graded races including the Triple Bend Hcp (Gr1).Alex Solis won the Sprint on Kona Gold.

Too Much Bling : 3 c Rubiano – Rose Coloured Lady, by Formal Dinner

Outstanding three-year-old sprinter. Baffert has raced him lightly, keeping this race specifically for him. Was most impressive when winning the Bay Shore Stakes by nine lengths, beating Songster. The latter turned the tables when beating Too Much Bling in the Woody Stephens (Gr2). Prior to the Bay Shore, he defeated Gr3 winner Cause To Believe by nearly five lengths in the San Miguel. He is coming into the race off an easy win in the Carry Back Stks (Gr2) but was beaten, albeit a length, in last year's Hopeful Stakes by Henny Hughes.

War Front : 4 c Danzig – Starry Dreamer, by Rubiano

Ultra consistent performer. Was most impressive when winning the A G Vanderbilt (Gr2) at Saratoga, and was not disgraced when second to Pomeroy, nearly unbeatable at Saratoga, in the Forego Hcp. His trainer Allen Jerkins is well known for causing upsets in major races and War Front is not without a chance of causing another. He will retire to Claiborne Stud at the end of the year and is a half-brother to graded stakes winner Ecclesiastic and Teammate.

NETJETS BREEDERS CUP MILE

Ad Valorem: 4 c Danzig – Classy Women, by Relaunch

Was flying last time out when narrowly beaten in the Atto Mile. He faces much stronger here, but as a dual Gp1 winner he clearly has class. He is drawn at one which should help him, although Jamie Spencer's record in North America leaves something to be desired. Ad Valorem was a slightly lucky winner of the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, but has not won since.

Silent Name: 4 c Sunday Silence – Danzigaway, by Danehill

A stakes winner in France, his biggest win to date was the Arcadia Hcp (Gr2).

Has been well beaten by Aragorn on several occasions and it is hard to see the tables been turned, unless the Drysdale runner encounters bad luck in running. Retires to Adena Springs after this race. His last race saw him beaten nearly three lengths by Aussie Rules.

Araafa: 3 c Mull of Kintyre –Resurgence, by Polar Falcon

Ran fourth in the English 2000 Guineas, behind George Washington. He then turned the tables on George Washington at the Curragh and winning the St James Palace Stakes, over subsequent Gp1 winner Stormy River. After a poor Sussex Stakes effort, he was a good second in the QE II behind the mighty George Washington.

Sleeping Indian: 5 h Indian Ridge – Las Flores, by Sadler's Wells

Bids to give his sire his third Breeders Cup Mile winner, following Domedriver and Ridgewood Pearl. Was an impressive winner of the Challenge Stakes last time out, beating Craven Stakes winner Killybegs.

His trainer, John Gosden, won this race with Royal Heroine. Winner of last year's Hungerford Stakes, Sleeping Indian looked unlucky in the Prix de la Foret (Gp1), and he beat subsequent Gp1 winner Spinning Queen in a Listed race before that. Sadler's Wells is damsire of Sillic, who won the Breeders Cup Mile. He retires to stud after this race.

Free Thinking: 5 h Unbridled – Danka, by Strawberry Road

Was second in the Kelso Hcp (Gr2) last time out behind the improving Ashkal Way, who is not considered good enough to run here. He got two pounds from the winner on that occasion and on that form needs to improve to feature here. He is well drawn however, and will be ridden by Jose Santos, who won this race on Steinlen.

He also ran second in the Firecracker Breeders Cup Hcp (Gr3) behind millionaire Miesque's Approval. Has yet to win a stakes race, but has won six of 19 starts to date.

Echo of Light: 4 c Dubai Millennium – Spirit of Tara, by Sadler's Wells

Looks to be Godolphin's stable elect, as Dettori rides. Has won three group races this year and was impressive when winning a Gp2 race at Longchamp.

He takes a step up in class, but is well drawn. His win in the Summer Mile was franked by runner up Satchem's win in the Joel Stakes (Gp3), whilst the horse he beat in the Strensall Stakes (Gp3), Stage Gift, has since won the Darley Stakes (Gp3) and was purchased recently by Sheikh Mohammed. He has won five of his ten starts.

Aragorn: 4 c Giant's Causeway –Onaga, by Mr Prospector

The likely favourite. He has won his last four starts impressively, and whilst he meets a strong field, could well win his third Gr1 race. His win in the Eddie Read Hcp (Gr1) was eye catching as he completed outclassed a field which included Gr1 winners Sweet Return and Fourty Niners Son, as well as Silent Name. His last race, when winning the Oak Tree Breeders Cup Mile (Gr2), saw Corey Nakatani just handride him.

Neil Drysdale has an excellent record in Breeders Cup races.

Badge of Silver: 6 h Silver Deputy – Silveroo, by Silver Hawk

High-class performer, has won graded races on turf and dirt. Was supposed to have retired to stud this year, but has been kept in training since his win in the San Gabriel Hcp over nine furlongs. Has not run since January. Supported primarily because of his connections.

Rob Roy: 4 c Lear Fan – Camanoe, by Gone West

Ran his career best last time when second in the Champion Stakes to Pride, beating the likes of Hurricane Run and Sir Percy. Had been disappointing previously in the Celebration Mile, when finishing last. He previously was a good third in the Sussex Stakes, beating Araafa. He is drawn a bit wide at nine and others are preferred.

Miesque's Approval: 7 h Miesque's Song – Win Approval, by With Approval

Underrated performer, who has won over $1 million. Was beaten two lengths by Aussie Rules in the Shadwell Turf Mile. He beat Silent Name by over a length on that occasion. He won three graded races this year as well as the Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes.

He also ran less than a length off English Channel, widely regarded as the best turf horse in the US. He has won four of six this year.

Drawn wide at ten, which won't make his life easy against this strong field.

Super Frolic: 6 h Pine Bluff – Lindsay Frolic, by Mt Livermore

Has not won in his five starts this year, all of which were on dirt. From a wide draw, he is hard to fancy. He did run third behind Lava Man, who is fancied for the Classic, in both the Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic. This is the shortest he has been all year. An outsider here.

Gorella: 4 f Grape Tree Road – Exiting Times, by Jeune Homme

Outstanding filly. She has won four of her five starts this year, with her only loss coming against the colts in the Turf Classic, at Churchill Downs.

She has an incredible turn of foot and her win in the Just A Game Hcp (Gr3) had to be seen to be believed. She the narrowly defeated Film Maker in the Beverly D Stakes (Gr1) and won her last start at Keeneland gamely over the smart filly Karen's Caper. A wide draw will make her life difficult here, but she did run third in this race last year.

Librettist: 4 c Danzig – Mysterial, by Alleged

Was disappointing last time out behind George Washington in the QE II Stakes, but was lame. Very widely drawn and looks to be Godolphin's second string, although his form looks stronger than his stablemate. Won the Prix du Moulin/Jacques le Marois (Gp1) double in good style. Has won all but two of his career starts but his draw makes his task almost impossible.

Aussie Rules: 3 c Danehill – Last Second, by Alzao

Underlines the strength of the European milers. He won the French 2000 Guineas earlier this year, beating Stormy River, but lost his next four starts. He has run well behind the likes of David Junior (beaten 1 length), Librettist (beaten 3 lengths). He won the Shadwell Mile in good style last time out, beating high-class milers Remarkable News and Miesque's Approval.

Round Pond: 4 f Awesome Again – Gift of Dance, by Trempolino

Winner of last year's Acorn Stakes. She has been lightly raced this year, starting just four times, she won two including a thrilling defeat of Happy Ticket in the Azeri Breeders Cup Stakes (Gr3). She then ran second in the Molly Pitcher BC HCp (Gr2) as favourite, before running third in the Beldame Stakes, beaten seven lengths by Fleet Indian. Her dam is a half-sister to Black Minnaloushe.

Pine Island: 3 f Arch – Matalacha Pass, by Seeking The Gold

Winner of her last two starts, both Gr1. She is quite lightly raced, having made just six starts, she has won four and placed in the other two. She was second in the Mother Goose Stakes behind Bushfire, beaten three parts of a length, but turned the tables on that rival in the Gazelle Hcp (Gr1). She also won Alabama, both of her Gr1 wins coming at the expense of Teammate. Her connections won this race last year with Pleasant Home.

Healthy Addiction: 5 m Boston Harbor – Lady Laika, by Gone West

Been in the first four in each of her seven starts this year. Her wins include the Santa Margarita Hcp (Gr1), Clement L Hirsh Hcp (Gr1) and a repeat win in the Lady's Secret (Gr2). She was disappointing in this race last year but didn't travel well. She has won 10 of her 22 starts and makes her last start here.

Sharp Lisa: 4 f Dixieland Band – Winter's Gone,by Dynaformer

A versatile filly, she has won graded races on dirt and turf. Only a four time winner, her last win came in the Santa Barbara Hcp (Gr2) in April. She was fourth last time out in the Spinster, beaten three lengths by Asi Siempre on Keeneland's all weather track. Her jockey, Pat Valenzuela, won this race on Adoration in 203.

Lemons Forever: 3 f Lemon Drop Kid –Critikola, by Tough Critic

A shock winner of the Kentucky Oaks, Lemons Forever's form, before and after the Oaks, leaves something to be desired. Following her win in the Oaks, Lemons Forever was well beaten in her next three starts. She was beaten nine lengths in the CCA Oaks, over nine lengths in the Alabama and finished unplaced in the Spinster Stakes. She does enjoy Churchill Downs and were she to recapture the form she showed in the Oaks could be a danger.

Spun Sugar: 4 f Awesome Again – Irish Cherry, by Irish Open

A dual Gr1 winner, she is one of three runners in the race for Todd Pletcher. She was disappointing last time out in the Spinster Stakes, but may not have enjoyed the Polytrack. She has won three of her five starts including the Go For Wand Hcp (Gr1) and the Apple Blossom Hcp (Gr1). The latter race saw her defeat Happy Ticket by a neck, while Spun Sugar defeated Balletto narrowly to land the Go for Wand.

Fleet Indian: 4 f Indian Charlie –Hustleeta, by Afleet

Has been in scintillating form this year, winning all of her six starts, including the Personal Ensign Hcp (Gr1) and Beldame Stakes (Gr1). She had to battle to hold off Balletto in the latter race, and she was not as impressive as she had been in previous races. She was very impressive when she won the Del' Cap by nearly six lengths and followed up with her first Gr1 win in the Personal Ensign, beating Balletto by nearly five lengths. On that form she is the one to beat in the Distaff.

Baghdaria: 3 f Royal Academy – Oatsee, by Unbridled

Very consistent three-year-old filly. She won the Indiana Breeders Cup Oaks (Gr3) last time out by four lengths , but takes a big step up in class. She has yet to show she is up to winning at this level, although she was won three Gr3 races this year. She has won five of her 11 starts.

Pool Land: 4 f Silver Deputy – Slew City Slicker, by Slew City Slew

Winner of the Ruffian Hcp (Gr1), she is a lightly raced four-year-old having won six of her eight starts, and placed once when third in the Go For Wand Hcp (Gr1) beaten over six lengths. In the Ruffan she defeated Gr1 winner Take D'Tour by two lengths, getting three pounds.

Hollywood Story: 5 m Wild Rush – Wife for Life, by Dynaformer

A top-class filly, she won the Vanity Hcp (Gr1) at Hollywood Park in July. Her best form has been at Hollywood however, and she has been well beaten in both times she has competed in the Distaff. She was second in her last two starts, both times behind Healthy Addiction. She was beaten six lengths by Healthy Addiction and clearly has to improve to win here.

Bushfire: 3 f Louis Quatorze – Traki Traki, by Mo Power

A triple Gr1 winner this year, she is a very game filly, who ran below her best when unplaced last time out in the Gazelle Hcp. Due to her winning her Gr1 races narrowly, Bushfire has never received the respect her record should entitle her to. She beat Pine Island in the Mother Goose by three parts of a length with Lemons Forever further back. She defeated outstanding turf filly Wait A while by nearly seven lengths in the Ashland Stakes. She has won six of ten starts and should not be overlooked here.

Asi Siempre: 4 f El Prado – Siempre Asi, by Silver Hawk

An impressive winner of the Spinster Stakes last time out. A versatile sort, she has won stakes races on dirt and turf. Her win in the Spinster did come on the all weather track, and it is feared that the form on the all weather won't translate to the main track.

Happy Ticket: 5 m Anet – Love and Happiness, by Septieme Ciel

Unplaced last time out in the Spinster Stakes, she will probably be better suited to the main track. She was impressive when beating the highly rated Pletcher runner Oonagh Mccool in the Fleur De Lis Hcp (Gr3) – run over the same course and distance as the Distaff. Was narrowly beaten by Round Pond at Oaklawn earlier in the year, but was giving the winner

A remarkably consistent mare, she has been unplaced twice in 19 starts.

Balletto: 4 f Timber Country – Destiny Dance, by Nijinsky II

Has not won a race since the Frizette (Gr1) but was injured and missed her entire her three-year-old campaign. Although she has been beaten in her six starts this year, she has not been disgraced and her run behind Fleet Indian in the Beldame was especially good, losing by a head. Before that run, Fleet Indian had thrashed her by nearly six lengths in the Personal Ensign.

JOHN DEERE BREEDERS CUP TURF

Go Deputy: 6 h Deputy Minister – Partygoer, by Secretariat

Has really come good this year, winning the Bowling Green Hcp (Gr2) and Sword Dancer Invitational (Gr1). He was then a good second to Cacique in the Man O' War Stakes and was beaten a nose in the Canadian International (Gr1) by Collier Hill. Seemingly the second string for Pletcher. He has won six of 18 starts and is a half-brother to Dare and Go.

T.H. Approval: 5 h With Approval – Potrichal, by Potrillazo

Bids to improve on his sire's runner up finish in this race in 1990. He ran very well last time out when just beaten by The Tin Man, who was coming off a win in the Arlington Million, in the Clement Hirsch Hcp. The third placed finisher, Artiste Royale, was beaten next time out and The Tin Man seemed to run below best. Nonetheless T H Approval has enjoyed a great year, winning his second San Juan Capistrano Hcp (Gr2) as well as two other graded stakes.

Icy Atlantic: 5 h Stormy Atlantic – Frosty Promise, by Frosty the Snowman

English Channel's pacemaker.

Scorpion: 4 c Montjeu – Ardmelody, by Law Society

Was a top-class three-year-old last year, winning the Grand Prix de Paris and St Leger, and running second to Hurricane Run in the Irish Derby. Has run only once since his unplaced run in the Arc. Although he will probably improve for the run, he was beaten by the moderate Frank Sonata and does need to improve further. He does have the scope to improve, and the race doesn't look as strong as usual.

Rush Bay: 4 c Cozzene – Seoul, by Deputy Minister

He loves the course, having won three of four starts at the course. He was second last time out in the Sycamore Breeders Cup Stakes, beaten by Revved Up.

Has won three of his six starts this year but takes a major step up in class. His biggest win to date came in the Jefferson Cup last year.

Cacique: 5 h Danehill – Hasili, by Kahyasi

Bids to emulate his full sisters Banks Hill and Intercontinental, both of whom won Breeders Cup races. Has won two grade one races and been placed in three others this year. There is not much between him and English Channel, the pair having met four times this year and each beating the other on two occasions. Cacique was particularly impressive in the Man O' War when accounting for Go Deputy and Showing Up.

He retires to Banstead Manor at the end of the year, where his full brother Dansili is doing so well.

Hurricane Run: 4 c Montjeu –Hold On, by Surumu

The outstanding turf performer of last year, his form this year hasn't been quite as good. Third last time out in the Champion Stakes, he looked unlucky when not getting a run in the Arc behind stablemate Rail Link. His last win came in the King George, beating Electrocutionist and Heart's Cry. His run to Pride last time out, was fair considering the fact he is better over further and Hurricane Run's class maybe enough to beat this field. He retires to Coolmore next year.

Better Talk Now: 7 g Talkin Man – Bendita, by Baldski

An upset winner of this race two years ago. He won the Sky Classic Stakes (Gr2) in Canada last time out, being well beaten in the United Nations and Arlington Million previously. A winner of the Dixie Stakes on Preakness day, it is strange that connections haven't supplemented a pacemaker for him. Classy sort, he needs to improve on current form.

Red Rocks: 3 c Galileo – Pharmacist, by Machiavellian

Ran third in the St Leger last time out, the form of the race was not franked by Sixties Icon and the runner up was a 66-1 outsider. He did run second to Rail Link in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gp1) and the winner went on to win the Arc. He also was second in the Great Voltigeur behind Youmzain, who went on to a win a Gp1 race.

English Channel: 4 c Smart Strike – Belva, by Theatrical

Most impressive last time out when winning the Turf Classic by nearly five lengths albeit over much weaker. He earlier won the Woodford Turf Classic on Kentucky Derby day, just holding off Cacique. The latter turned the tables in the Manhattan Hcp next time out.

He was beaten in last year's BC Turf, by the Europeans but looks the strongest of the local challengers, although there is not much between him and Cacique. Slightly disappointing when fourth in the Arlington Million, but was not suited by the pace. He has won four of his six starts this year.

Silverfoot: 6 g With Approval – Northern Silver, by Silver Ghost

Been unplaced in last three starts and is an outsider here. He has won just once this year, but loves the course and ran well in last year's Breeders Cup when sixth in a stronger field. His only win came in the Louisville Hcp (Gr3) at Churchill Downs.

BREEDERS CUP CLASSIC

Brother Derek: 3 c Benchmark – Miss Soft Sell, by Siyah Kalem

Top-class three-year-old. He was considered a leading Triple Crown contender earlier in the season, when his wins including a defeat of Stevie Wonderboy and an easy score in the Santa Anita Derby. He ran a creditable fourth in the Derby, after racing very wide, but was disappointing in his next two starts. Well beaten by Lava Man last time and it is hard to see him turning the tables.

Premium Tap: 4 c Pleasant Tap – Premium Red, by Thirty Six Red

Caused a huge upset when winning the Woodward Stakes, beating the likes of Sun King and Flower Alley. He looked unlucky last time, when bumped and interefered with in the Kentucky Cup Classic. Prior to his Woodward win, he was unplaced in the Whitney, but had beaten Sun King in the Albert The Great Stakes. His sire was second to A P Indy in 1992.

Bernardini: 3 c A P Indy – Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American.

The favourite. An outstanding three-year-old, his sole defeat came on debut. Since then he has reeled off a string off impressive wins, culminating in a smooth win against older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. If he wins here, as he is expected to, it is likely he win be retired. The winner of all of the Preakness, Jim Dandy, Travers, Jockey Club Gold Cup and Withers Stakes, Bernardini is an outstanding racehorse and the one to beat.

George Washington: 3 c Danehill –Bordighera, by Alysheba

The best three-year-old in Europe. He was devastating last time out when outclassing Araafa to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. A four time Gp1 winner, George is known to be temperamental and has never been beyond a mile before, though on pedigree that should not be a problem. It will be his first race on dirt and Ballydoyle's record in the Classic, with the exception of Giant's Causeway, is poor.

Lawyer Ron: 3 c Langfuhr – Donation, by Lord Avie

A multiple Derby winner, he is coming off a second place in the Super Derby, behind Strong Contender. Previously he won the St Louis Derby, after a poor run in the Kentucky Derby. A leading fancy for the Derby, Lawyer Ron had won all of the Risen Star Stakes, Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby. A strong front runner, he takes a big step up in class and has yet to face older opposition.

Perfect Drift: 7 g Dynaformer – Nice Gal, by Naskra

Is running in his fifth Classic, with his best finish being a third place finish last year behind Saint Liam. Has not won in over a year and was second in the Kentucky Cup Classic last time out. The winner Ball Four was beaten next time out, and with Premium Tap looking unlucky it is hard to know how reliable the form is. Whilst Perfect Drift is consistent, he seems to have lost the winning edge but is very classy and loves Churchill Downs.

David Junior: 4 c Pleasant Tap – Paradise River, by Irish River

Has won two of his three starts this year, the Duty Free in Dubai and the Eclipse, although Ouija Board did look unlucky in the race. His sole loss came in the Prince of Wales Stakes. He won the Champion Stakes last year, beating Pride, but has yet to race on dirt. A flashy colt, he retires to stud in Japan after the race.

Lava Man: 5 g Slew City Slew – L'il Ms Leonard, by Nostalgia's Star

Is unbeaten this year in seven starts. His wins include the Santa Anita Hcp, Charles Whittingham Hcp, Pacific Classic and the Hollywood Gold Cup – a race he won last year as well.

Has won Gr1 races on turf and dirt, and should he win here, would be Horse of the Year. Was most impressive when winning the Goodwood Breeders Cup Hcp last time out, beating Brother Derek comfortably by over two lengths, Giacomo was further back in third. He has achieved his success in California and needs to confirm outside.

Giacomo: 4 c Holy Bull – Set Them Free, by Stop The Music

Last year's upset Kentucky Derby winner. Giacomo has only won once since the Derby, he took the San Diego Hcp (Gr2) earlier this year. He was well beaten by Lava Man in both the Pacific Classic and Goodwood, but has done well at Churchill Downs.

Flower Alley: 4 c Distorted Humor – Princess Olivia, by Lycius

Ran a great race when second to Saint Liam in this race last year. He has won just once this year, being well beaten in the Whitney Hcp and Woodward Stakes. Todd Pletcher says the colt is coming back to his best and Flower Alley has too much class to ignore. He won both the Travers Stakes and Jim Dandy last year and were he to bounce back would give the fancied runners something to think about.

Invasor: 4 c Candy Stripes – Quendom, by Interprete

Has lost just once, when beaten by Discreet Cat in the UAE Derby. Horse of the Year in Uruguay, Invasor has won all of his US starts. He was game in the Whitney, beating Sun King a head, with Premium Tap and Flower Alley further back. He missed the Jockey Club Gold Cup due to being ill. Before that he won the Pimlico Special and Suburban Hcp.

Suave: 5 h A P Indy – Urbane, by Citidancer

He was fifth in this race last year. Lightly raced this race, his biggest win came in the Washington Park Hcp (Gr2) where he beat Perfect Drift by five lengths. He struggles when racing in the highest company and was well beaten in the Woodward.

Sun King: 4 c Charismatic – Clever But Costly, by Clever Trick

A versatile and consistent colt, he has yet to win at the highest level, but was narrowly beaten in all of the Met Mile, Woodward and Whitney Hcp. His only win came in the Commonwealth Breeders Cup (Gr2), where he beat a useful field. Yet to win at this level, he is too consistent to ignore, but is widely felt to be at his best at less than 10 furlongs.
