The David Payne trained Carnegie Express looked
just about 100% at Randwick today as he had an exhibition gallop in
preparation for his resuming run next week.
The four-year-old ran with stablemate Making Whoopee, and the two worked
off the 1400m mark.
Making Whoopee took the lead while Carnegie Express was happy to sit off
the pace until the 200m.
He then wound up and kicked clear from his un-raced mate and went to the
post in strong fashion.
They were clocked at 35.05 for the last 600m and 23.14 for the last 400m.
"I am very happy with that run," said Payne
"He's learnt to settle now and I really believe he is a genuine
stayer, anything less than 2000m is not going to suit him."
Carnegie Express will resume in the Parramatta Cup (2000m)
next Saturday at Rosehill before The BMW (2400m) on April 12) and the
Sydney Cup (3200m) on May 3.
Syndicator Harry Lawton, who bought the horse as a yearling, was thrilled
at the horse, not just for the way he worked but they way he was, both
physically and mentally.
"He looks magnificent, he's so much happier in himself, he's a
different horse," said Lawton.
Making Whoopee, a three year-old Anabaa filly and the un-raced stablemate
of Carnegie Express, has plenty of ability according to Payne.
"Oh she's very good, no doubt about it, but she just has problems
getting into the barrier!
"She's been out injured after she kicked the gate and hurt her flexor
tendon, but she has a lot of ability no doubt about it.
"We just have to get her right mentally."
