STARS COMPETITIONS

22 July 2002

South Africa’s two top juvenile races, the R500 00 Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes and the R350 000 Grade 1 Thekwini Fillies Stakes, are the final legs of the Stars competitions for horses, jockeys and Media tipsters.

They will be run on All Stars Day at Clairwood Racecourse on Saturday, July 30, and could be crucial to the outcome of the jockey and tipster competitions.

The Turfstar Competition has already been won by the two Joey Ramsden horses, Shadow Dancing and Winter Solstice, who each have 24 points. None of the runners in the two juvenile races are within striking distance of the pair and they will share the R400 000 prize with Ramsden receiving the R100 000 trainer’s prize.

In the Topstar Competition for jockeys, there is still much to play for and while Weichong Marwing might appear safe at the head of the table on 68 points, Glen Hatt and Anton Marcus, on 58 and 48 points respectively, are still in the reckoning.

In the Tipstar Competition, Johan Stassen (The Herald) still leads on 164 points with Lionel Derbyshire (Sowetan) second on 150 points. Chad Cooke (Daily News), Damian Patterson (Pretoria News) and Harold Sterley (The Star) are close behind on 148 points.

With a maximum of 40 points still available in the two races, the picture could change drastically by the end of the day on Saturday, July 30.
