THE COX PLATE OF 2005 21 October 2005 |
|
Greys Inn will face 13 other horses in Saturday's Carlton Draught Cox Plate (Gp1). The current favourite is Makybe Diva, although many feel three-year-old Gods Own is the one to beat. GREYS INN: Drawn at two, the Zabeel entire is said to be working well. He bids to give his sire back to back wins in this race-Savabeel winning last year. He ran a cracker on his Australian debut when fourth to El Segundo (Pins) in the Yalumba Stakes. He meets a far stronger field here and does need to improve again, however his trainer, Mike de Kock, specializes in winning when not expected to and he should be considered a real threat to the main fancies. LAD OF THE MANOR: Another son of Zabeel, who is enjoying one of his best ever seasons and currently leads the Australian sires list. He is bred on similar lines as another Cox Plate winning son of Zabeel-Might And Power. He touched off the favourite Makybe Diva two starts ago, although the mile would have short of the Desert King mare's best distance. The form was reversed over ten furlongs next time out. It should be close between the two again. Lad of the Manor, who has yet to win at the highest level, has the impressive record of 11 wins from 19 starts and seven placings. SUPER KID: High-class Hong Kong performer. He has impressed in both of his Australian starts, when narrowly losing, twice, to Barely A Moment (Gilded Time) in two Gp1 races. He does have ground to find with Greys Inn on their QEII form however. He is another flattering line on Silent Witness-whose first overseas foray is much anticipated. CONFECTIONER: Beat Greys Inn last time out in the Yalumba but the latter is expected to improve. Smart performer, he was previously third to Makybe Diva and Lad of the Manor. The five-year-old son of Bubble Gum Fellow has won eight of 20. He is out of a mare by former Cox Plate winner Our Poetic Prince. DESERT WAR: Dual winner of the Epsom Hcp (Gp1). Bred on similar lines to red hot sire Redoute's Choice. Impressed when winning the Epsom last time defeating the likes of Lotteria impressively. Bids for a hatrick of wins here. Beat Brisbane Cup hero Portland Singa by length at his penultimate start. The gelding has yet to win over the distance. Desert War, who has won just under $1 million, has won six of 18. FIELDS OF OMAGH: Seems to save his best for this race, he won it two years ago and ran second to Savabeel last year. The eight-year-old is getting on but has run well in his last two starts. He had both Confectioner and Greys Inn beaten in the Yalumba when second to El Segundo. He has won over $3.9 million and should be right there again. TOSEN DANDY: One of the outsiders in the race. The Japanese entry was unplaced behind Lad of the Manor and ran second in a Listed race last time. He has decent form in Japan but doesn't look up to winning a race of this caliber. XCELLENT: Once defeated, the son of Pentire is New Zealand's reigning Horse of the Year. A winner of six of seven, the gelding landed the Gp1 Kelt Capital Stakes last time out in workmanlike fashion. Prior to that he was devastating when landing the Mudgeway Stakes (Gp1). His sole defeat came in the Australian Derby (Gp1). Xcellent is an outstanding racehorse and should be well suited to the distance. He does face his toughest task to date. OUTBACK PRINCE: Former top class two-year-old. He was unplaced in the Epsom Hcp last time out. He was narrowly beaten in the George Main Stakes, against weaker, over a mile. He has won just four of 24 starts and is an outsider here. He is a half-brother to another contender, Hotel Grand. MAKYBE DIVA: The hot favourite. The popular Desert King mare was named Horse of the Year in Australia last season. Following a disappointing trip to Japan, the seven year old was given a 118 day break. She bounced back to win two of her last three starts, including her last win over Lad of the Manor. Connections are very confident of a good showing from the dual Melbourne Cup winner. She has won over $9.6 million. SKY CUDDLE: High-class mare. She was beaten just two lengths by Barely A Moment last time out in the Toorak Hcp (Gp1). She has yet to beat colts at the highest level and has yet to try the ten furlong distance-which her pedigree suggests may be beyond her. She beat a useful field of fillies two starts back in the Jayco Stakes (Gp2). She faces a tough task here. LOTTERIA: Top class filly, she ran a good third to Desert War in the Epsom Hcp (Gp1). She is two kgs better off now and should turn the tables although she has yet to win over the distance. She has two of her last four starts, including a Gp2 win over colts in the Shannon Stakes. She needs to improve to win here but can run into the money on her best form. She is by red hot sire Redoute's Choice out of a mare by Sir Tristram and has won seven of 12 and been unplaced just twice. GOD'S OWN: Originally made the second favourite, the three-year-old has drifted in the betting. He was a spectacular winner of the Caulfield Guineas (Gp1) last time out when nearly falling early on in the race. He has made just five starts, winning three, and looks the one to beat here, if his inexperience doesn't prove to be a hindrance. He is out of a three parts sister to former Cox Plate winner Saintly. HOTEL GRAND: Another top class three year old, he won the Spring Champion Stakes earlier in the season and bids to follow in Savabeel's footsteps. Savabeel landed the Spring Champion before capturing the Cox Plate. Hotel Grand's Gp1 win came at the expense of the smart Pendragon-a colt widely tipped to land the Victoria Derby. On his form through Primus, Hotel Grand has ground to find with God's Own. SELECTION
