When Dance With Ravens won Monday's Grey Breeders Stakes (Can Gr2), he became the third stakes winner for his remarkable dam, Dance Smartly.

The filly, elected to the US Hall of Fame in 2003, is a daughter of recently retired Danzig.

Her dam, Classy N Smart, also a Canadian Champion, is a daughter of Smarten and blue hen, No Class. She is the dam of Philip Iselin Handicap winner and leading sire, Smart Strike, grade one winner, Full of Wonder and promising young SA sire, Strike Smartly.

The latter won the Chinese Cultutal Center Stakes and now stands at Mauritzfontein Stud.

Dance Smartly, bred by Sam-Son Farms, was a star on and off the track. She won 12 of her 17 starts. She was good enough at two to be named champion in Canada and ran third in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies to Eclipse champion Meadow Star.

Named Horse of the Year in Canada in 1991, and was named Eclipse Champion three year old filly in the US in the same year.

Dance Smartly won the Canadian Triple Crown over colts and conquered champion Fly So Free in the Molson Million.
She then won the Breeders Cup Distaff over Fit For A Queen and paternal half sister, Versailles Treaty, by a comfortable one and a half lengths.

She was lightly raced at four, beating the colts in the Canadian Maturity and running third in Beverly D Stakes. Retired as a result of a pulled suspensory ligament, Dance Smartly never ran worse than third in her 17 life time starts.

Her achievements at stud earned her a Sovereign Award as Broodmare of the year in 2001. She produced back to back Queen's Plate winners in Scatter The Gold and Dancethruthedawn. Both by Mr Prospector, as her 95 colt, Dance Brightly was. The latter was a high class two year old, running second in the Coronation Futurity. Dance With Ravens is her two year old-and is by leading sire A.P. Indy.
