Danzig has been pensioned due to failing fertility and difficulties
in covering mares. The 27 year old son of Northern Dancer will spend
his remaining years at Claiborne Farm, where he stood his whole stud
career.
A blazingly fast individual who won his three starts before injury
forced his retirement, Danzig stood his first season at $25,000. It
turned out a bargain as he led both the freshman sires list and the
two year old sires list with his first crop.
His first crop included champion Chief's Crown, who won the inaugural
Breeders Cup Juvenile. Danzig would sire other BC winners in Dance
Smartly, two time BC Mile winner Lure and War Chant. His sons have
enjoyed huge success at the Breeders Cup and six have already sired
BC winners.
Among his over 180 stakes winners are champions Group/Grade One winners
Dayjur, Zieten, Blue Duster, Petit Loup, Strolling Along, Pine Bluff,
Polonia and Danzig Connection.
He sired no less than six winners of Britain's premier sprint, the
July Cup, in Hamas, Green Desert, Agnes World, Anabaa, Polish Patriot
and Elnadim.
His most successful sire son is undoubtedly the late, great Danehill
but other sons Green Desert, Anabaa, Chief's Crown, Belong To Me Polish
Precedent and leading SA sire National Assembly have all left their
mark.
An outstanding broodmare sire Danzig is the maternal grandsire of
Fusaichi Pegasus, Arch, Glamour Boy, Dancethruthedawn, Tranquility
Lake, Hula Angel and Caller One. He is also the broodmare sire of
leading young sire Distorted Humor.
His influence will be felt for many years to come and few sires will
ever match his impressive 18% stakes winners to foals. Both the Epsom
Derby and Oaks winners are descendents of Danzig.
