DHANPAL NAIDOO PRESS RELEASE

(Media Release)
14 February 2003

PIONEER Durban businessman Mr Dhanpal Naidoo died at his home in Umhlatuzana early today.
Mr Naidoo, 90, was largely responsible for the development of a network of tote agencies in Chatsworth and other areas of KwaZulu-Natal.
His son, Mr Kiruban Naidoo, said his father had applied for a licence to operate the first tote agency for betting on horse racing in Chatsworth. The licence was granted in 1968 and the agency was opened at the Chatsworth Hotel.
Mr Naidoo's pioneering efforts led to the creation of a network of seven agencies in Chatsworth which are now operated by his family.
He also contributed towards the development and success of agencies at Raisethorpe in Pietermaritzburg, Verulam, Kokstad and Austerville in Durban.
The Managing Director of Gold Circle, Mr David Furness, today offered his condolences to the Naidoo family on behalf of the Board, Management and Staff.
"The significant infrastructure of the agency network was as a result of Dhanpal's foresight and initiative and we are indebted to him."
As a mark of respect flags at Scottsville Racecourse will be flown at half mast during racing on Sunday.
The funeral will take place at the Clare Estate crematorium in Durban at 3 pm this Sunday.
