In a difficult year for voters, four horses have been nominated as Horse of the Year in America namely, Azeri, Left Bank, War Emblem and the Cartier Horse of the Year, Rock of Gibraltar.

Azeri was also unanimously voted champion older filly/mare. She is the only finalist to dominate her division so thoroughly - the last horse to be unanimously voted as champion was Point Given as champion three year old colt in 2001.

Posthumous awards are being awarded to leading owner - breeder Ogden Phipps and Steward Howard Battle.

The awards are to be held in California on the 27th of January 2003.
