One of South Africa's most influential sires, Elliodor, has died at Daytona Stud. The son of Lyphard was 27. He was pensioned last year.

A lightly raced horse, who won once in four starts in France, Elliodor started off his stud career with little fanfare. His first crop of foals were numbered at just 14 but included his greatest son, Model Man as well as the smart Eli's Star. His next two crops were both small, in 1984 he was listed as having sired just five foals but both included smart performers with the 84 crop including the group one winning My Freedom.

A stallion whose influence is well represented in the Paddock Stakes - he sired four winners of the race and is the grandsire of three other winners. His colts and fillies both excelled and his versatility is underlined by his siring SA Derby winners Kale and Super Quality to Computaform Sprint winner Rodoille.

Elliodor's daughters keep him in the limelight through the likes of Trademark, Cordocelli, Dog Wood, Donatella ,Tarn Fairy and Dash for Gretna.

Elliodor sired 73 stakes winners from 782 foals. His son Model Man has also enjoyed a successful career at stud and to date has sired 34 stakes winners including champion Special Preview. Model Man like his sire has become a leading broodmare sire. Another son, Eli's Star, sired dual classic winner Eli's Truth and Cape Flying Ch'ship winner Eli's Game from limited opportunities.
