French Derby Result For 2003

Dalakhani maintained his unbeaten record in Sunday’s French Derby with a smooth victory over the Peintre Celebre colt, Super Celebre.

Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, victorious in all the French classics this year to date, the laid back gray imitated his late sire, Darshaan, who won in 1984.

Super Celebre was two lengths back in second, with the nicely bred Mtoto colt, Coroner, a further three lengths back in third place. The much talked about, Papineau, finished fifth.

Trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, Dalakhani is said to be aimed at the Irish Derby, with his ultimate goal the Prix de’l Arc de Triomphe.

The Aga Khan owned three year old, a half brother to champion Daylami and the smart Daymarti, has won all of his starts to date, including Group 1 wins in the Prix Lupin and Criterium International.

The undercard saw impressive wins for Vespone (Prix Jean Prat) and Maiden Tower (Prix de Sandringham). Vespone, a son of Lyphard sire Llandaff from the family of Verveine and the smart Vallee Enchantee, won going away from Italian Guineas runner up Prince Kirk. The favourite Tashkandi was third.

Vespone had previously won the Group 3 Prix La Force and is obviously very talented.

Maiden Tower was a good second in the French 1000 Guineas and the Sheikh Mohammed owned filly won the Group 2 Sandringham. The daughter of Groom Dancer defeated the smart Acago, with English 1000 third, Intercontinental third.

Porlezza won the Group 2 Prix du Gros Chene for the second year when downing the favourite, Zipping. The four year old Sicyos filly won comfortably by a length and a half. Porlezza, seventh on her previous start, hails from one of the best families in the stud book - that of Green Dancer, Alhaarth and Grey Dawn II.
