A SENSATIONAL extravaganza of speed unprecedented in the history
of South African racing is on the way.
The four Grade 1 sprints to be run over 1 200 metres at Scottsville
Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, May 29, has attracted
a massive 141 entries.
Every speed horse of note has been nominated for the biggest
sprint meeting in the country which includes the R500 000 Gold
Reef Casino Resorts Medallion for juveniles and the R400 000
Golden Horse Casino Sprint.
The Golden Horse Casino Sprint is a merit rated handicap open
to all horses and 37 horses from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and
the Western Cape have been nominated, including Geoff Woodruff’s
two sprinting stars, Cataloochee and the unbeaten Safe Structure.

To Conquer, Dr Connel, Justice Joshua, Kiss The Cup, Protector,
River Plate and Smart Solution are among the entries and Charles
Laird has nominated Nhlavini and Staff Officer.
There are also a few surprise entries like Vaughan Marshall’s
Play Catch, Terry Lowe’s Royal Mariner and Mike de Kock’s Toreador,
which adds to the tapestry of the event.
The R350 000 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship has drawn
an entry of no less than 43 juvenile fillies with the largest
contingent of 22 coming from KwaZulu-Natal stables. Gauteng-based
yards have entered 14 horses with five from the Western Cape
and two from the Eastern Cape.
Among the entries is Vaughan Marshall’s Goldkeeper filly, Secret
Of Victoria, who won the Grade 3 Strelitzia Stakes over 1 200
metres at Clairwood on Sunday along with Kierov Ballet, Harem’s
Secret and Paved In Gold who followed her home.
The R300 000 SA Fillies Sprint has received 29 entries including
Brett Crawford’s Nothing But Silk and Ormond Ferraris’ Overarching.
Mike Bass has nominated Easyjadeasy and Mike de Kock has entered
Elegant Blush, Fair Maiden and Real Red.
Patrick Lunn’s Legally Blonde is likely to be one of the more
fancied runners along with Geoff Woodruff’s Costa Marfil and
Googol.
The cream of the juvenile colts and geldings have been nominated
for the R500 000 Gold Reef Casino Resorts Medallion with 32
entries including last Sunday’s Grade 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes
winner, What A Question, from the yard of Alistair Gordon. Nominations
have come from all four major racing regions and include Vaughan
Marshall’s National Captain, who was runner-up on Sunday.
Once again the Golden Horse Casino race meeting at Scottsville
is guaranteed to provide thrilling finishes.
With such large entries, full fields are like for the Jackpot
of Grade 1 events.
