GOLDEN LOOM THE ONE TO BEAT

(Media Release 16 July 2002)

The nine-year-old Golden Thatch gelding, Golden Loom, will be the horse to beat in the R250 000 Mercury Sprint over 1 200 metres at Clairwood in Durban on Saturday, 27 July 2002.

That is the view of his trainer, Buddy Maroun, who said at the weights his charge was unbeatable if putting his best foot forward in spite of his age.

Maroun also said that he might retire Golden Loom and the two other members of his "three old men" trio, Fov's Favourite and All Will Be Well, after the Mercury Sprint. However, depending on how they did, he might consider having one last crack at the Computaform Sprint with one or all of them next year.

Golden Loom has won 21 races from his 61 starts and been placed in another 30 and has earned R2 531 875 for his owners.

"He ran a good race in the Golden Horse Sprint because he was not really at his best. He was just 2,5 lengths behind the winner and the way the weights are structured in Saturday's race they cannot beat him if he does his best."

Between Golden Loom, Fov's Favourite and All Will Be Well, they have run in 203 races, won 51 and been placed in another 95. They have earned an incredible total of R6 031 170 in stakes.
