JOCKEY CLUB VACCINE DIRECTIVE

6 January 2004

NOTIFICATION RELEASED BY THE S A JOCKEY CLUB, 6 JANUARY 2004

EQUINE INFLUENZA VACCINATION PROGRAMME
FOR BREEDERS SENDING HORSES TO EITHER THE CAPE YEARLING SALES
OR CAPE BROODMARE SALES IN MARCH 2004

All horses on the property must receive an initial vaccination using one of the recommended products as detailed below. This vaccination may be given by a lay person and not necessarily by a veterinarian. In every case the stickers accompanying the vaccine must be attached to the appropriate page in the passport, together with the date and signature of the person who administered the vaccine.

All animals must be given a booster vaccine between 21 and 60 days after this initial vaccination. For those animals entering the sales ground this booster vaccine must be given by a veterinarian or by a lay person in the presence of a Jockey Club official.

Where a booster has already been administered not in compliance with the above, then a third dose of vaccine must be administered at least 21 days after the booster vaccination by a veterinarian or by a lay person in the presence of a Jockey Club official.

In every case the stickers accompanying the vaccine must be attached as well as the date of administration. The latest vaccine administered must also have the signature of the veterinarian or Jockey Club official or alternatively, a Jockey Club stamp.

Foals born to mares which at foaling had not been vaccinated for the previous 6 months must begin a vaccine programme from 4 weeks of age. Foals however from vaccinated mares (i.e. those having had flu vaccines at no more than 6 month intervals) need only begin the vaccination programme at 4 months. In either case, booster vaccination at 21 - 60 days by a veterinarian or in the presence of a Jockey Club official is required with the appropriate proof of vaccination being available.

In every case of a horse being presented at a sale yard, the last vaccine it has received must be at least 7 days previously and have been administered either by a veterinarian or in the presence of a Jockey Club official.

Where a veterinarian is administering the vaccine, it must be supplied by him and he will invoice the breeder/owner directly. In the case of a Jockey Club official witnessing the administration, he will supply the vaccine and the Stud Farm will be charged at the rate of R60.00 per vaccination. This price is subject to The Jockey Club acquiring sufficient supply of the Proteq Flu Vaccine.

Any of the vaccines listed below may be used :

Equilis Equenza T
Equine Influenza Batches 1 - 5 (Onderstepoort)
