Former champion miler and sire, Kris, has died. He was 28 and died in his paddock. He had been retired from stud duty for several years.

Owned and bred by Lord Howard Walden, he won 14 of 16 starts while trained by Henry Cecil. His wins included the Sussex and St James Palace Stakes. His sole defeat at three came when second to Tap on Wood in the English 2000 Guineas.

As a four year old he was lightly raced, winning three of four starts including the Lockinge Stakes. He was second to Known Fact in the QE11 Stakes before being retired to stud in Yorkshire.

Champion sire in GB in 1985-thanks largely to his Triple Crown winning daughter Oh So Sharp, Kris had a long and highly successful stud career. The sire of 77 stakes winners, including Flash of Steel, Rafha, Single Empire, Common Grounds and Riviera, Kris was an outstanding broodmare sire.

The damsire of over 65 stakes winners amongst them Doyen, Okawango, Rose Gypsy and Epsom Oaks heroine Moonshell, Kris’ sons have been less successful.
