LEADING SIRES OF 2004

The flat season in the UK and the majority of Europe has all but ended. Sadler's Wells continues his dominance in the sires list - he has won his 14 sires title. Despite an ordinary three year old crop - by his standards - he was well represented by older horses such as Doyen and Refuse To Bend. Doyen stays in training.

His best three year old, arguably, was the filly, Quiff. She remains in training as does his French Derby runner up Prospect Park. His daughter, Playful Act, is a leading classic contender following her wins in the May Hill and Fillies Mile for John Gosden. The Coolmore legend also leads the French broodmare sires list thanks to the likes of American Post, Whipper and his three parts sister Divine Proportions.

Danehill leads the two year olds sires list by money won in the UK by over two hundred thousand pounds from Pivotal. His best representative was Grand Criterium winner, Oratorio. Albert Hall won the Beresford and finished second in the Racing Post Trophy.

Leading freshman sire in the UK by prize money was Giant's Causeway. He led the list by a big margin from fellow Coolmore stallion, Montjeu - who capped a promising first season with his first Group One winner in Motivator. The late Dubai Millennium was third on the list - thanks to his National Stakes winner, Dubawi. The latter is current favourite for next year's Derby.

Not surprisingly, Rainbow Quest leads the broodmares list by money won from Darshaan. For the second year in a row, a colt out of a mare by the Banstead Manor inmate won the Derby. Other contributors included the multiple Group One winner Rakti.

Linamix heads the French sires list from Danehill and Sadler's Wells. The grey son of Mendez was represented by 19 stakes winners this year including Arc runner up Cherry Mix and talented but ill fated Millemix. Danehill enjoyed a good year in France thanks to Group One winners Grey Lilas, Westerner and Oratorio.

Kingmambo topped the two year olds sires list for money won thanks to champion daughter, Divine Proportions. The performances of that Niarchos owned filly helped him to a fee of $300,000 for next year. Second on the list is Kendor, represented by another good filly in Centrifolia.

Monsun heads the leading sires in Germany thanks partly to his Derby winning son, Shirocco but he was also represented by the 1-2 in the German Oaks. Konigsstuhl's outstanding son has now been champion sire three times.
The now Turkey based Sri Pekan is the top sire in Italy as far as prize money goes. He was represented by top fillies Rumba Loca - winner of the Italian 1000 Guineas and upset Del Mar Oaks winner Amorama.

The North American sires list, for prize money won, has been distorted due to Smarty Jones' $5 million bonus. This leaves Elusive Quality, a fortunate leader ahead of arguably better sires such as El Prado and A.P. Indy. The son of Gone West will stand for a fee of $100,000 almost solely due to Smarty Jones hysteria. Storm Cat tops the two year old list for a sixth time - thanks to grade one winners Consolidator and champion Sweet Catomine. The son of Storm Bird's popularity is understandably as strong as ever and his fee remains at a cool $500,000.
