There was little change among the leaders of the various sires list this year. All of the top six leading sires in the UK are either Danehill, Sadler’s Wells or one of their sons. In the UK/Ireland, Danehill headed the list of general prize money. The son of Danzig was responsible for five individual Gp1 winners including the outstanding pair of Peeping Fawn and Dylan Thomas. Danehill finished nearly 700,000 pounds in front of the second horse on the list, Galileo. Galileo had another tremendous year. His Gr1 winners including the brilliant Irish Derby victor Soldier of Fortune and the unbeaten two-year-old star New Approach. It is the second consecutive year that Galileo is the sire of a champion juvenile colt – the undefeated Teofilo being the previous one. His paternal half-brother Montjeu, sire of Epsom Derby hero Authorized, is third on the list, ahead of the consistent Danehill Dancer. The dominant Sadler’s Wells is only fifth on the list, although he enjoyed another fine year thanks to top stayer Yeats, promising filly Listen and the Gp1 winner Saddex. The leading juvenile sires list was headed by Galileo, thanks to New Approach. He just headed promising first season sire, Acclamation. The latter was represented by no fewer than 24 individual juvenile winners, including the now retired Middle Park Stakes winner Dark Angel. Yet again, Sadler’s Wells headed the broodmare sires list. His daughters produced the winners of over 3 million pounds. The best performer produced by a Sadler’s Wells mare this year was the brilliant filly Peeping Fawn, winner of four Gp1 races in a row. The latter filly’s half-brother Thewayyouare is a leading hopeful for next year’s Classics. Sadler’s Wells is also broodmare sire of Passage of Time (Musidora Stakes), Ibn Khaldun (Racing Post Trophy) and group winners Echo of Light and Regime. Second leading broodmare sire this year was Darshaan. His daughters produced Oaks third All My Loving, Derby and Champion Stakes runner up Eagle Mountain, Gp2 winning juvenile Curtain Call and classic placed Honolulu. Third on the list was Diesis, maternal grandsire of Leger winner Lucarno. |
