LONHRO ROMPS HOME IN CHIPPING NORTON

Lonhro (Darren Beadman) strolled home in the Group
One $250,000 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) this afternoon with the
eternally honest Shogun Lodge (Hugh Bowman) in second place.
The speed was only fair and Beadman settled the Octagonal son off the
pace.
Only when stable mate Freemason (Rod Quinn) started scooting around the
outside of the field did Beadman click up the stallion. He came around the
field on the turn and proceeded to pass the leaders, gathering them up
with every stride.
He won by one and a quarter lengths to Shogun Lodge (by Grand Lodge) with
Dress Circle (by Zabeel) in third spot a further short neck away.
They ran 1.37.93 for the mile, the final 600m in a nippy 33.44.
Shogun Lodge made a concerted effort down the centre and was taking some
ground off Lonhro but the black horse was too good and won going away.
Trainer Bob Thomsen appeared to be overcome in the mounting yard as his
old stalwart Shogun Lodge ran second.
The rising seven year-old has won $4,573,564 in prize-money from 51
starts.
"He's such a great horse he's been so good to me," said Thomsen
and then paused as he watched the gelding return to scale:
"I don't know where we'll go to next, we'll just take each day as it
comes."
