Mystics have a field day with numbers ahead of Vodacom Durban July

Durban – With Vodacom Durban July fever spreading across the country, everyone is trying to find out who will win the R2,5 million main race, and are willing to consult any one of a number of mystical sources to get the inside track information.

Numerologists are having a field day with the profusion of sevens. The race will be run on the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year of the new millennium - and the Vodacom Durban July is the seventh race. horse number seven is Pick Six (with seven letters in its name).

But it is Badgers Gift, number 13 and drawn to start from stall number seven that has cropped up in a number of other predictions.

Sangoma Oratio Tshabalala threw the bones and came up with three numbers that she says represent the first three horses that will cross the line. 3, 13 and 15.

That will put Badgers Gift, Jay Peg and Buy and Sell in the money on Saturday afternoon. Buy and Sell also featured in another novel annual tradition that takes place at Greyville Racecourse in the weeks preceding the Vodacom Durban July.

Just after the final field is announced, twenty beans are planted in separate pots, and watered equally. With just a handful of days to go to the big race, it looks to be a two horse race, according to the beans flourishing outside the Gold Circle offices - Buy and Sell and race favourite Kildonan.

Mystic and tea-leaf reader Mavis O’Donaghue also saw Kildonan finishing strongly, against a grey horse – Silver Mist and Dynamite Mike are the only greys in the field, a jockey with a gold cross on his chest – perhaps referring the silks that Anthony Delpech will wear aboard Royal Air Force, and horse number 13 – Badgers Gift.

For thousands of punters and socialites on the course, the day will be more about a whimsical flutter based perhaps on a fleeting tip, or the colour of the jockeys silks, or a gut-feel based on how the horse looks in the parade ring before the race.

Only time will tell….

The Vodacom Durban July takes place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 7 July 2007. More information can be found at www.vodacomdurbanjuly.co.za
