THE NELL GWYN STAKES OF 2007

18 April 2007

The British classic trials kick off with the Nell Gwyn Stakes (Gp3) at Newmarket today. A field 10 will line up at 4:45 (SAF time).

SANDER CAMILLO: 3 f Dixie Union - Staraway, by Star de Naskra
Winner of two of her three starts last year, Sander Camillo is the ruling favourite for the 1000 Guineas (Gp1). She makes her first start since July when romping away with the Cherry Hinton Stakes by five lengths over Alzaerra and Gilded (Queen Mary Stakes). She had previously won the Gp3 Albany Stakes over subsequent group winners Silk Blossom (Lowther Stakes) and Scarlet Runner (Princess Margaret Stakes). She is hot favourite for the race, despite giving the other runners three pounds.

BARSHIBA: 3 f Barathea - Dashiba, by Dashing Blade
She has had just two starts, running second on debut before breaking her maiden at her first start at three. Basaata, who beat her by three lengths on debut, had previously run second to the Gp1 placed filly Darffonah, beaten a length. Basaata has not run since, and neither the third nor third placed finishers have franked the form. Barshiba was impressive when easily winning at Lingfield on the all weather, and both the runner up and third placed runners have won since.

BLUE ROCKET: 3 f Rock of Gibraltar - Champagne Girl, by Robellino
Winner on debut last year, she was second to Pretty Majestic in a conditions race next time out. The second placed, third placed, fifth placed runners behind Blue Rocket on debut have all won since.
Her last start saw finish six lengths back in the Gp1 Cheveley Park Stakes, when third last.

FANTASY PARKES: 3 f Fantastic Light - My Melody Parkes, by Teenoso
Something of an unknown quantity she won her only start to date when winning at Haydock over six furlongs last year, despite breaking badly. The form has been franked by the second and third both winning subsequently,
She should enjoy the extra distance but clearly lacks the experience of some of the runners.

KASEEMA: 3 f Storm Cat - Onaga, by Mr Prospector
Arguably the greatest threat to the favourite. She made a winning debut, despite racing green, at Yarmouth last year before running seventh in the Rockfel Stakes behind leading Guineas fancy Finsceal Beo. Her win at Yarmouth is working out well, despite the second horse being well beaten at her only start since.
Beautifully bred she is a three parts sister to both Aragorn and One Cool Cat.

KOMPETE: 3 f Komaite - Competa, by Hernando
Was well beaten last time at Wolvehampton, but may not have enjoyed the all weather track. She has been well beaten each time she has stepped up to Listed class, running fourth to Blue Echo in the EBF Fillies Stakes, whilst she was unplaced in the Ripon Two-Year-Old Trophy, after which she broke her maiden at Nottingham, beating the moderate Kilcusnin Queen.
She ran well on debut, when beaten a length by classy filly Satulagi

NINA BLINI: 3 f Bertolini - Film Bluff, by Midyan
Looked very promising in her first three starts, when four lengths of classy colt Elhamri, winning and then finishing third in the Queen Mary Stakes. In the latter race she was beaten a length and a half by Gilded, who was beaten over five lengths by Sander Camillo in the Cherry Hinton and Nina Blini should be well held by that filly.
The second filly at Ascot was Simply Perfect, who came out to win the Fillies Mile.
Nina Blini's form deteriorated after the Queen Mary and she needs to come back to that form to feature here.

PRECOCIOUS STAR: 3 f Bold Fact- Flames, by Blushing Flame
Ran six lengths off Hellvelyn (won Coventry Stakes) on debut before winning two in a row. She then ran second in a Listed race, beaten a length by the winner, who ran two and a half lengths off Simply Perfect in the May Hill Stakes next time out. She was well beaten, by over four lengths, by English Ballet in the Sweet Solera before being sent to Dubai. Precocious Star never showed her true form in her two starts there, but came back to England. Last time out she captured the Masaka Stakes, on the all weather track at Kempton.

PRETTY MAJESTIC: 3 f Invincible Spirit - Cheeky Weeky, by Cadeaux Genereux
She broke her maiden at her third start, after running second to Gilded on debut and following that run with a fourth place as hot favourite. Her maiden win came against a moderate field at Pontefract over six furlongs, and her pedigree suggests she maybe a sprinter. Her sole bad run came over seven furlongs where she weakened late.

SCARLET RUNNER: 3 f Night Shift - Sweet Pea, by Persian Bold
Winner second time after a fair debut effort behind smart juvenile Bicoastal. She followed up her maiden win with a third place, beaten two lengths, behind Sander Camillo in the Albany Stakes, despite suffering from a poor draw. She confirmed the promise of this race, by defeating subsequent stakes winners Vital Statistic, Simply Perfect, Indian Ink and Alzerra in the Gp3 Princess Margaret Stakes next time out. Both Simply Perfect and Indian Ink. She was disappointing in her next two starts, but didn't enjoy the soft going on either start.
