A Forestry colt set a new record when selling for $16 million at Fasig Tipton's Calder Selected Two-Year-Olds in training sale. It is the highest amount ever paid for a horse sold at public auction. The colt, out of Unbridled mare Magical Masquerade, is closely related to Landaluce Stakes (Gr2) winner Magicalmysterycat (Storm Cat).
The colt, who worked impressively prior to the sale, became the focal point of both Demi O'Byrne and John Ferguson. He worked the fast 1/8 of a mile of the sale.
The sale itself achieved a record aggregate ($62,187,000) and average (187,000) for a juvenile sale.
The most sought after sire, in terms of average, was the mighty Storm Cat. Overbrook's legendary stallion was averaged over $650,000 ahead of Mr Greeley, Dixie Union, Distorted Humor and first crop sire Johannesburg.
Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, who consigned the sales topper, were the leading vendors, while Demi O'Byrne was the leading buyer.
