PERSIAN PUNCH STATUE UNVEILED

17 October 2005

A roar worthy of a true champion greeted the unveiling of a bronze statue
of Persian Punch beside the paddock at Newmarket today.

It is fitting that Newmarket was chosen as the racecourse to commemorate
Persian Punch as he won five times here- three Jockey Club Cups, a Bahrain
Trophy and a Sagaro Stakes, which was re-routed from Ascot.

Owner Jeff Smith, together with his wife Veronica, trainer David Elsworth,
jockey Martin Dwyer and stable lad Dick Brown were on hand to see the wraps
taken off Persian Punch, who sadly collapsed and died in the Sagaro at
Ascot 18 months ago.

Smith said: "Persian Punch was everything that you could possibly dream
about in a racehorse. It is sad that he has gone, but the memories will
live on forever.

"Obviously, his three-timer in the Jockey Club was a special achievement,
but I will also always particularly remember his victory in the Goodwood
Cup. He had such a ding-dong battle through that final furlong, and, though
he was beaten a stride before and a stride past the winning post, it was
typical of Punch that where it mattered he had his head in front. He was
such a fighter - I have been in racing all my life and I have never seen a
horse like him and I don't think I ever will."

Elsworth commented: "Persian Punch was pure theatre. In tennis parlance he
would have been two sets down and come out on top 3-2, while in golf he
would have been three down with three to play and still won."

Recalling that 20th and final victory in the Jockey Club here two years ago
to the day, Dwyer, who rode Punch to six of his victories, declared: "He
was an amazing horse, and it was a privilege to ride him. The old boy
retired a few jockeys along the way, but I have never ridden a bigger
battler. You could always rely on him to pull out a little extra when our
backs were to the wall.

"We were in trouble in that Jockey Club and being attacked on all sides,
but he got a crack over the head with another jockey's whip, and as Pat
Eddery came past hard to the bridle on Millenary he looked across at me and
was grinning from ear to ear. I think the smack over the head woke up
Punch, and I said to me 'come on boy, let's not let old grandad beat us'
and he found fresh reserves and snatched the race out of the fire."

Brown, who idolised Persian Punch, was similarly lavish in his praise. "He
was a star," declared the Whitsbury lad. "He was like a lamb beforehand,
but as soon as he walked in the parade ring he became a gladiator."

Former jump jockey Philip Blacker, who revealed that it took him eight
months to sculpt Persian Punch, was "pleased" with the final result. He
said:"Persian Punch was a big, robust horse, who looked more like a jumper,
so it was important that we did not make him small. I was pleased that Jeff
and David wanted him to be looking on the move, and I'd like to think that
we have brought out the character of the horse, especially his tenacity and
refusal to be beaten."

There are 12 smaller replicas of this solid bronze statue available, each
costing £5,000 plus VAT, with proceeds being in aid of the Persian Punch
Memorial Fund, which is funding the statue. They are bound to prove popular
as collectors items, and anybody interested should contact the racecourse
for more details.

TODAY'S £1-MILLION PLUS CHAMPIONS' DAY

Champions' Day, which was first staged in 1997, is overall the
highest-class raceday in Britain with two Group 1 races, two Group 2s, two
Group 3s and one of the season's most prestigious and valuable handicaps,
the £130,000 totesport Cesarewitch. Prize money this year totals
£1,073,200.

It is second in the list of the most valuable cards in Britain just behind
Vodafone Derby Day at Epsom and just ahead of Diamond Day at Ascot.
However, unlike these days, which rely heavily on one big race as their
central focus, Champions' Day has the highest quality throughout its seven
races.

The £433,200 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (G1) is Newmarket's most
valuable race of the season and has its 129th anniversary in 2005.

Champions' Day is geared around established champions making their final
appearance of the British season and the emergence of the champions of the
future.

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES

SIR PERCY MAKES IT FOUR FROM FOUR

Sir Percy, the first horse to race on the Flat for retired solictor
Anthony Pakenham, maintained his 100 per cent record when he made it four
wins from four starts with a tenacious defeat of odds-on Horatio Nelson in
the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

As a result he was catapulted into the forefront of the betting for next
year's Stan James 2,000 Guineas and Vodafone Derby. His price for the
Guineas varies between 10-1(totesport) and 20-1 Cashmans and for the Derby
where he is on 10-1 with totesport and 25-1 with Cashmans.

The colt's trainer Marcus Tregoning, though, warned that people "should
not start taking a short price about him now. We'll have to see what
happens in the spring and he certainly won't be rushed," he said. "He has a
lot of speed and I would think he would find a mile and a quarter his
optimum trip. But his dam was by Blakeney, so maybe he will stay a mile and
a half. I am sure he is in the Derby, but if he isn't we can always
supplement him if we have to.

"He is undoubtedly the best two-year-old I have trained and he is a
pleasure to train. He has a great attitude, and though he may get a bit on
his toes sometimes, when he comes back after working he always eats up. He
is a great one for his three meals a day.

"I think he still has developing to do as he is still quite immature; when
I look at him I can see him changing shape.

"When Martin (Dwyer, the horse's regular jockey) has ridden him in his
last three bits of work he has been very pleased with what he has done and
he has been adamant that he would win this race.

"If he had still been mine (Tregoning owned the colt briefly between
buying him as a yearling for 16,000gns and passing him on to Anthony
Pakenham and his wife Victoria last winter), I expect he would probably
have been sold to the second bidder after he had won first time out at
Goodwood. But he wasn't mine by then and I am delighted that I am still
training him.

"I was a bit worried during the race when for a moment or two around
halfway he seemed to come off the bridle for a moment or two, and then when
he made his run down the centre of the track. I thought the ground was
definitely better nearer the stands, but it was all alright in the end."

DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES

Martin Dwyer was impressed with Sir Percy who retained his unbeaten record
in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes.

The jockey said: "He's a really good horse, the real deal. I've always had
a lot of faith in him. He has not run for a while and he was a bit fresh
and full of himself, but I was very impressed with him. He just idled a
bit when he heard the crowd."

FALLON TIGHT-LIPPED AS NELSON IS SUNK

Kieren Fallon parried every question and walked past the assembled press
without replying following Horatio Nelson's unlucky neck defeat by Sir
Percy in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

Repeatedly denied a run, Horatio Nelson, winner of the Grand Criterium at
Longchamp a fortnight ago, finally escaped from his pocket half-way up the
hill, but, though he was finishing well, the post came too soon for the
8-11 favourite.

Aidan O'Brien, who trains Horatio Nelson for Sue Magnier, said: "He has run
a great race. He was almost brought down at half-way and was on his knees.
He did well to stand up."

Asked whether next year's Stan James 2000 Guineas remained on Horatio
Nelson's agends, O'Brien replied:"It is hard to say. We will what the
spring brings."

O'Brien has the first two in the betting for the Guineas, with Corals
taking a surprise view in easing George Washington (a late defector here
because of the ground) half a point to 7-2, while Ladbrokes, who have
George Washington as a short as 2-1 favourite, offer Horatio Nelson at a
top-priced 7-1. William Hill make George Washington a 11-4 chance and go
6-1 Horatio Nelson.

Corals make 'Horatio' 4-1 favourite for the Vodafone Derby, for which
Ladbrokes are again top quote at 7-1.

GEORGE WASHINGTON WITHDRAWN

Aidan O'Brien has decided to rely on Horatio Nelson rather than George
Washington in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes at 2.35pm today,
announcing the decision 20 minutes before the first race.

George Washington has been taken out because of the ground and Kieren
Fallon will switch to ride Horatio Nelson.

AIDAN O'BRIEN TALKS

Aidan O'Brien, Ireland's champion trainer, explained to Channel 4's Derek
Thompson before racing why he withdrew George Washington from today's
Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

He said: "We are just going to run Horatio Nelson. The ground is definitely
on the soft side - it is what we would probably call in Ireland yielding
ground.

"Of all the good horses we have had, I never thought we would get a better
one but George Washington is probably the best horse we have ever had -
definitely the best two-year-old we have ever had.

"I just wanted to make sure that we are doing the right thing with him -
we are not running him which is definitely not the wrong thing but to run
him and to have given him a hard race in ground that he did not like at the
end of a long season just might leave its mark on him for the winter.

"We are just giving him every chance. He definitely will not run again this
year."

Turning to Oratorio's chance in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, he
said: "Oratorio is in good form. Everything was right with him yesterday.

"We had a little bit of a scare with him on Thursday - his white blood
cells dropped which was a worry. When that happens there is a little
infection somewhere. But when we took his blood on Friday they were back
perfect. The only worrying thing about it was when we put him on the scales
last night he was a couple of kilos up so he had retained a bit more fluid
that we had expected. His scope was perfect."

DAVID JUNIOR IS JUST CHAMPION

Jamie Spencer might be champion jockey-elect, but you could have heard a
pin drop with racegoers open-mouted in disbelief as he stunned the huge
crowd when springing a 25-1 surprise on David Junior in the feature
Emirates Airline Champion Stakes.

Only Hurry Harriet (33-1) in 1973 has produced a bigger shock in this
prestigious race since World War Two, but Spencer is adamant that David
Junior, who got home by three parts of a length from French challenger
Pride, was a worthy winner.

The rider said: "I have loved David Junior since I won the Select Stakes on
him at Goodwood last month. That was a messy race, with Darryll (Holland)
pulling up in front, and it developed into a three and a half furlong
sprint.

"He did well to win that day, but he felt a different horse altogether in
today's fast-run race and I was never going to get beat.

"My only worry was that he would idle in front and he did, but, though I
got stuck wide and had to come back from further than I had planned and
everything went wrong that could go wrong, he is still won, which says a
lot about the quality of the horse.

"To win a Group 1 against the older horses is a real bonus and shows what a
good horse David Junior is. He'll be one hell of a horse next year and,
provided Godolphin don't nick him, he could make my season."

Brian Meehan, who trains David Junior for David Sullivan, one of the
leading lights in Birmingham FC, was ecstatic afterwards - and justifiably
so.

He said: "We have been very patient with this horse and taken our time, and
now he has paid us back big time. I was in Keeneland when David Junior won
at Goodwood, but Jamie was on the phone straight after the race and assured
me that he would make himself available for this race.

"He is one of the best 10 furlong horses around, and, though you can never
be confident when you bring an outsider for a Group One, he was in top
order and I knew he would run well.

"We will have to see whether he gets an invitation from Hong Kong, but
there is always next year. He definitely stays in training."

EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES

Jamie Spencer, after riding his first Emirates Airline Champion Stakes
victor on David Junior, said: "It was a tough race and the bookies gave us
no chance which I could not believe, but I rode him at Goodwood and I
really liked him.

"He travelled so well in the race today. I think I gave him a bad ride as I
went way too soon on him - I got my rhythm going from three out and, as he
is a long-striding horse, I just let him go and followed Richard (Hills on
Maraahel) and he really picked up.

"Brian (Meehan - the trainer) said it is a Group One but to ride it like a
normal race - get him nice and relaxed and just ride the race as it comes
to you."

Philip Robinson, who rode the sixth home Rakti, said: "It was a ridiculous
race - they let one go off a million miles clear and I never saw any
daylight at all. There were probably six of us in the same boat.

"I think he was the best horse - he was doing things on the bridle. That's
racing."

PRIDE'S VALIANT EFFORT

The five-year-old mare Pride put her luckless run in the Prix de l'Arc de
Triomphe well behind her with a storming effort to take second place, three
quarters of a length behind the 25-1 winner David Junior in the Emirates
Airlines Champion Stakes, delighting her trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre and
jockey Christophe Soumillon.

"She has run very well and I have always said that she is a Group 1 filly,"
said the trainer. "In the Arc she was stopped at least twice, but this
shows how good she really is. She has been invited to the Japan Cup, but I
think that a mile and a half is too far for her and I will see if we can
get her into the international at Hong Kong over a mile and a quarter.

"She won't stay in training next year. She is five years old now and it is
time for her to start having babies."

Soumillon, who was riding Pride for the first time, was very pleased with
her effort.

"The trainer told me not to get there too soon as she sometimes stops when
she gets in front. So I waited with her and when I saw Jamie Spencer take
the lead on the winner I was not sure that he would come back to us, so we
went after him. She could not quite get there, but she was very generous in
the way she tried."

Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, whose Maraahel was
third, was very satisfied with the colt's display. "I think the first time
blinkers helped him. He travelled very well -- he always travels very well
in his races -- but he has just the one run.

"But he has now been placed in two Group 1s, which is pretty good. I expect
that Sheikh Hamdan will like to have him in Dubai in the winter, but maybe
we will try for the mile and a quarter race at Hong Kong," he said.

Race One: VC Bet Challenge Stakes
Winner's Quotes:

LE VIE DEI COLORI SAVES SPONSORS

Sleeping Indian was all the rage for the opening VC Bet Challenge Stakes,
but though the 9-4 favourite had every chance and looked all over the
winner in the Dip, he found one too good in the revitalised and first time
visored 20-1 shot, Le Vie dei Colori, much to the relief of the sponsors.

Neal Wilkins, PR Director for Victor Chandler, said: "Someone up there
likes us - we have sponsored this race for six years and Le Vie dei Colori
is the third 20-1 winner."

Luca Cumani, who trains Le Vie dei Colori, said: "He has always been a good
horse - he was third in the Sussex and the Prix de la Foret last year - but
for some reason he lost his way after winning first time out this year at
Leicester.

"I could just never get a tune out of him and he seemed to be stuck in a
comfort-zone, but we gave him a piece of work in a visor two weeks ago and
he was a revelation.

"They really seemed to perk him up, and they have worked the oracle out
there. I thought Gerald (Mosse) gave him a super ride - I told him to let
the horse find his rhythm and put him where he was happy and that if he
could, to pick him up at the furlong-pole. It could not have worked out
better."

Cumani, who in hindsight, feels that Le Vie dei Colori's hard race in the
Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May took more out of him than he first
realised, said: "If we got an invitation to run in Hong Kong we might well
consider it, but otherwise he will probably go off to stud."

VC Bet CHALLENGE STAKES

GOSDEN BEATEN BUT UNBOWED

John Gosden may have been disappointed that his 9-4 favourite Sleeping
Indian went down to 20-1 shot Le Vie de Colori in the VC Bet Challenge
Stakes, but he he was far from disappointed with the way in which his horse
ran.

"The winner has certainly refound his form - you could not have predicted
that on the form book - but our fellow has run a blinder and I am delighted
with him," he said.

"He will definitely stay in training next year, but before that he could
go for the Prix Perth over a mile at Saint-Cloud. If we miss that he will
start off next year in the Sandown Mile," the trainer added.

Chris Richardson of the Cheveley Park Stud felt that their filly Peeress
ran extremely well to be fourth. "Maybe this has come a bit too quickly
after she won the Sun Chariot a fortnight ago," he opined.

"She had a pretty hard race in testing ground that day and conditions were
pretty testing again here. Mick Kinane said that she was travelling very
sweetly, but that when he asked for a bit extra she rather fell in a heap,
as if she was saying 'I'm knackered," Richardson added. "She will stay in
training."

GOING AFTER THE FIRST

Jamie Spencer thought the ground was "just on the easy side of good".

Philip Robinson described it as "slow".

Jimmy Fortune said it was "soft, very dead ground".

Frankie Dettori said it was "on slow side of good" as did Darryl Holland.

Kieren Fallon described it as "soft"

Seb Sanders thought it was "good ground".

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
totesport CESAREWITCH

SERGEANT CECIL MAKES HISTORY

Sergeant Cecil became the first horse to complete the treble of the three
big staying handicaps when his victory in the totesport Cesarewitch this
afternoon followed those in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and the
Ebor at York. Only three horses have ever tried to pull off that treble
before him.

And as well as being a notable achievement for his trainer Rod Millman, it
also completed a brilliant comeback season for his jockey Alan Munro, who
returned to these shores this season after 10 years away and was riding his
first Newmarket winner since.

"Rod has been brilliant, not only with this horse but also for me," said
Munro, who will be off on his travels again towards the end of the year
when he will be riding for three months in New Zealand.

"When I came back from the wilderness at the start of the year Rod was the
first man to pick me up and get me going again. His early two-year-old
winners really helped to get me back on the map again."

Millman, equally complimentary about the jockey, was also lavish in his
praise of his stable staff, including Sharon Steel, who rides Sergeant
Cecil out every day. "Everyone involved has done a marvellous job," he
said. "I have been up here at the sales all week, but I knew very well that
he was in safe hands at home.

"I first got him when he was a three-year-old, when he had been with Seamus
Mullins," Millman recalled. "He had run a few times but his owner Terry
Cooper wanted to try him in a flat yard, while Seamus' is more of a jumping
stable and so he came to me. He was in superb condition when he arrived."
To confirm that there was no bad blood between trainers over the horse's
move, Mullins and his wife Sally were among the first to congratulate
Millman after the race.

"We have had our eye on these three big handicaps all the year and the
Doncaster Cup, when he ran so well against Millenary, was really a bit of
an afterthought," the winning trainer went on. "Then after that we thought
we would run in the Jockey Club Cup as there would be a smaller field and a
better chance of picking up some prize money, but then we thought about the
big handicap treble.
Terry was very keen on the idea and so we decided to have a go. It was only
quite recently that we realised that no-one had pulled it off.

"Now we shall have to start thinking about the Cup races with him for next
season. He is not a difficult horse to ride but he needs a jockey who is
confident in him. He wants to be ridden like the jockey knows the gap will
come when you need it; it's no good taking him to the wide outside to get a
run, it's almost as if he wants to have to fight to get there."

Those comments were very much echoed by Munro, who said of Sergeant Cecil,
"When I pulled him out I was confident that we would catch King Revo, even
though he did have quite a good lead. He is a great horse to ride - he
will fight to hold his place if you want him to he make a move when you
want him to and he will come back to you if you want him to."

And thinking of coming back, Munro is delighted that he made the move to
return to these shores for this season. "It has been brilliant to ride
winners here again and I am very much looking forward to next year. As soon
as I am back from New Zealand, it will be first stop Rod's."

DETTORI LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT YEAR

Frankie Dettori dismounted from Vinando (25-1), who ran out of his skin to
finish fourth behind Sergeant Cecil in the totesport Cesarewitch, and told
trainer Charles Egerton "roll on next year".

Dettori said: "I got stopped twice, and you can't get away with that in a
race with so many runners. It cost me valuable ground, and, in the
circumstances, he has run a blinder. I would love to ride him next year -
he'll nearly win."

Tim Fitzgerald might also be back in 12 months time with Inchnadamph, who
belied his odds of 50-1 when finishing third.

He said:"Martin (Dwyer) has given him a terrific ride, and, while he said
that it was a messy race, I'm delighted to have finished in the money.

"Why he was that price baffles me. He was 12-1 before he ran at Haydock,
where he hated the dead ground, and I could not believe it when they pushed
him out to 50-1.

"He has done us proud this season. He ran in a boys' race at Doncaster on
the first day of the season and here he is at Newmarket on Champions' Day
running three weeks before the curtain comes down. He needs two miles plus,
so perhaps we'll come back next year."

Race Five: Owen Brown Rockfel Stakes
Winner's Quotes

SLY ON A HIGH AS PUNTERS HIT ROCK BOTTOM

Peterborough trainer Pam Sly, known more for her jumping successes at
nearby Huntingdon, celebrated her first Pattern winner and also her first
at Newmarket when Specios (20-1) put another nail in the coffin for many
punters when winning the Group 2 Owen Brown Rockfel Stakes.

Sly, who only has nine Flat horses, was showered with congratulations,
declaring: "It is simply unbelievable - I had two runners at Huntingdon and
they ran like pup!

"But we have always thought the world of Speciosa, whom we bought at the
Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale from Willie Browne for 30,000 guineas.

"I'd be hopeful that she would train on as she is a big filly with a lot of
scope. My feet have not left the ground and I have not even thought about
the (Stan James) 1000 Guineas, but I hear that the tote quote her at 33-1,
so perhaps we better have a think about it."

Michael Fenton, who rode Speciosa, said: "I told Pam after she won at
Beverley that we would have to start talking Group races, and she ran a
cracker to finish third behind Nasheej in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster.

"I advised Pam to drop her back a furlong as she is a filly with tons of
speed. She also has plenty of class."

MANNING SUSPENDED

Kevin Manning was suspended for five days (October 26 through 30) after
being found guilty of two instances of careless riding on Abigail Pett, who
finished third in the Owen Brown Rockfel Stakes.

In the first instance he impeded Darryll Holland on Queen Cleopatra, and in
the second interfered with John Egan's mount Oh How Lovely, who in turn
interfered with Beauty Bright, the mount of Kieren Fallon.

WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
JOCKEY CLUB CUP

COVER UP STILL GOING STRONG

More than two years since his previous success, the eight-year-old Cover Up
showed that he is anything but a light of other days when he held the late
effort of Tungsten Strike in the Jockey Club Cup.

And he could well be back again next year as Peter Reynolds, manager of the
Ballymacoll Stud who own the winner, said "there had been a bit of a doubt
about him staying in training next year, but I think after that we will
give him another season.

"We had him back at the stud for a year last season and he got very fat, so
when we sent him back to Sir Michael (Stoute) he complained about that.

"I said to him, 'just give the horse time and get the weight off him and
we'll see what he can still do.

"He really enjoyed himself out there and he liked having horses round him
through the race. What an old character he is !"

JOCKEY CLUB CUP
PLACE QUOTES

NO DOUBLE FOR MILLENARY

Millenary was made 11-10 favourite to win the Jockey Club for the second
year running, but John Dunlop's evergreen eight-year-old entire, who had
barely broke sweat to win the Doncaster Cup, showed the other side of his
character and finished a third behind 20-1 shot Cover Up in the Jockey Club
Cup.

Dunlop, who has conjured 12 winners out of the enigmatic Millenary,
including the 2000 St Leger, said: "He has finished well, but he saw too
much daylight. It is not easy to get cover here, but he has run some of
best races on the course, and perhaps Richard (Quinn) had him a bit wide.

"The plan is to keep Millenary going for another year. He still seems as
enthusiastic as ever, so we'll soldier on until he tells us that he has had
enough."

SEVENTH RACE
LEXUS DARLEY STAKES

ENFORCER PUTS MUIR BACK IN BIG TIME

Last word on Champions' Day went to trainer Willie Muir, who struck with
12-1 shot Enforcer in the Group 3 Lexus Darley Stakes.

Martin Dwyer got Enforcer home in a photo-finish with the Kieren
Fallon-ridden Mullins Bay, and Muir was all smiles afterwards.

Muir said:"When the rain came earlier in the week I told Martin that
Enforcer would win. He finished well in front of Hazy View last time, yet
that one was second favourite and we have been as big as 20-1.

"That is our first Group winner since Averti took the King George V Stakes
at Goodwood a few years ago, so this is a special moment.

"Martin had to ride Enforcer much handier than he normally does as they
went no pace, but he is a jockey who is flexible enough to change tactics
when necessary.

"Next year Enforcer will be going for all the top races, and I'd love to
win the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown."

Part-owner Denis Clarke said:"Enforcer got beat off a mark of 79 first time
out this year at Doncaster, but Martin got off and assured us that he was
the real deal."

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

Following a dry night, conditions on the track have continued to improve
and the going for Champions' Day is

GOOD TO SOFT, GOOD IN PLACES,

with a going stick measurement of 7.1, compared with 6.6 at the same time
yesterday.

"The going is on the slow side of good," said clerk of the course Michael
Prosser. "The mist will soon go and the sun will come out, and if the
breeze gets up I can see the track drying up a bit more. I shall walk the
course again about two hours before racing."

BETTING NEWS

The prospect of some brilliant racing on Champions' Day has brought the
punters out in droves and the totesport Cesarewitch (3.45), always a very
popular betting medium, has seen support for a wide range of horses.

One of those is Land 'n Stars, who provided a big turn-up when he won here
last month and has come in from 11-1 to 9-1 with VCBet, from the same price
to 8-1 with the sponsors and from 11-1 to 10-1 with Paddy Power. Power have
also had support for King Revo, whom they have brought in from 18-1 to
14-1, while Coral have made the same move with the five-year-old and VCBet
and Hills have brought him in from 16-1 to 12-1.

Mirjan is another who has been in general demand and has been trimmed from
20-1 to 16-1 with Paddy Power and VCBet and from the same price to 14-1
with Coral and totesport. Coral is among the firms who have had money for
Swift Sailor, whom they have cut from 18-1 to 14-1, while totesport have
cut Mark Johnston's horse to that price from 20-1. Fortune Island has been
brought in from 20-1 to 16-1 by Paddy Power and VCBet, with the former also
reporting interest in Ten Carat (28-1 to 25-1) and the rank outsider Quedex
(50-1 to 40-1).

Betting has taken a wide range in the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes
(3.10) with Paddy Power, Hills, VCBet and totesport bringing Prospect Park
in from 20-1 to 14-1 and Coral to the same price from 25-1. Layman has been
cut from 20-1 to 14-1 by VCBet, from 22-1 to 16-1 by Paddy Power and from
25-1 to 16-1 by totesport. Coral have also cut Alkaased from 15-2 to 13-2
and Alexander Goldrun from 11-1 to 10-1, while Powers have eased out Rakti
from 10-1 to 12-1.

In the opening VCBet Challenge Stakes (2.05) Somnus has been popular with
Paddy Power and Hills, where he is at 12-1 from 14-1, while he is at the
same price to 10-1 with totesport. Sleeping Indian has been trimmed by the
sponsors from 11-4 to 5-2 and to the same price from 3-1 with Powers.

Art Eyes has been popular in the Jockey Club Cup (5.05) and is at 100-30
from 7-2 with Paddy Power and from the same price to 3-1 with VCBet.
Betting on the Darley Dewhurst Stakes (2.35) has inevitably been quiet with
the uncertainty surrounding Aidan O'Brien's horses, but Hills report steady
support for Sir Percy at 6-1.

Sentimental Roses, Yarmouth, August, 1985 Background: Partnered his first
success for trainer Barry Hills before joining Mel Brittain's North
Yorkshire stable the following year while spending winters riding in
America. He moved on to ride for Bill O'Gorman, and in the spring of 1991
was appointed retained rider to owner Prince Fahd Salman, for whom he won
the Derby on Generous. In the mid 1990s he headed to the Far East, riding
in Japan and Hong Kong before in 2000 deciding he wanted to take a break
from horses. He took up karate and is now a black belt in the sport but
decided it was time for a return to racing, explaining "No-one calls and
you lose your identity - you have to readjust to being just a small person
in the world and it's really hard.'' He returned to Britain this season
and, riding mainly for Rod Millman, he has ridden 56 winners in 2005. Other
