PREAKNESS STAKES OF 2005

With the Derby being won by the 50-1 shot Giacomo, many are predicting another upset in the second leg of America's Triple Crown. The likes of Closing Argument and Afleet Alex are back to improve on their Derby placings, while Derby disappointments High Fly, High Limit and Sun King bid to improve on their last runs.

GIACOMO: Needs to disprove the general belief that his Derby win was a fluke. The last Derby winner to lose the Preakness was Monarchos in 2001, and Giacomo's rivals need to step up on their Derby form. His form prior to the Derby was one of an improving but not top class colt and he needs to keep improving to win here.
A son of Holy Bull, he is from Lyphard's immediate family. The fourth choice in the betting did not get a great draw-he is drawn 13.

AFLEET ALEX: Benefited from a great ride in the Derby to run third. He may prefer the shorter distance of the Preakness and is the currently luke warm favourite. His form prior to the Derby was sparkling and he should be in the first three, although Giacomo is preferred. His trainer, Tim Ritchey, is not pleased with the draw of 12 for his fleet colt.

CLOSING ARGUMENT: The biggest surprise in the Derby when a fast finishing second at 70-1. He had been well beaten by both Bandini and High Limit when third in the Blue Grass at his previous start. The winner of the Holy Bull, when ending High Fly's unbeaten run, he is well drawn at seven.

GOING WILD: The Lukas trained runner has no chance on his current form. Unplaced in his last three starts, he beat two home in the Derby. His trainer rates him highly, but his form suggests he is not the horse who ran second to Declan's Moon earlier in the season. He has the widest draw of 14.

GALLOPING GROCER: Another who needs to recapture his good earlier form. A smart two year old, he ran second to Rockport Harbor in the Remsen, beaten a neck. He has been beaten in his three starts since, with a fourth place in the Wood Memorial his most recent effort. He is drawn at eight.

GREELEY'S GALAXY: Well beaten when eleventh in the Derby. He was impressive when winning the Illinois Derby by over nine lengths. He is well drawn at four but needs to improve on his Derby performance. The handsome son of Mr Greeley has won three of his five starts to date.

HAL'S IMAGE: One of the new horses. A half brother to Florida Derby winner, Hal's Hope, he won the Unbridled Stakes at his last start. Takes a huge jump in class and has won just two of his 16 starts to date. Another well drawn, he is drawn at six. Jose Santos bids for his second Preakness win in three years.

HIGH FLY: He was very disappointing in the Derby. Prior to that he had been beaten just once, in the Holy Bull Stakes. Jerry Bailey has kept faith with the colt despite his poor Derby performance. He is another whom the short distance should suit. Nick Zito got the two draw for his Atticus colt.

HIGH LIMIT: Injured when last of the 20 runners in the Derby. He gets a new rider in Edgar Prado. The Maria's Mon colt was one of the Triple Crown talking horses following his scintillating four length win in the Louisana Derby. He was then beaten six lengths by Bandini in the Blue Grass Stakes, but had Closing Argument three lengths further away. On that form, if he has recovered from his injuries he should go close here.

MALIBU MOONSHINE: Malibu Moon's son Declan's Moon was last year's Derby favourite. When he got injured, another Malibu Moon stepped up. Malibu Moonshine has won two stakes races, including the Federico Tesio. The last was run over the same course and distance of the Preakness. Few winners of this race have had much impact in the Preakness recently and this colt will need to improve.

NOBLE CAUSEWAY: Second in the Florida Derby to High Fly. He got into some trouble in the Derby and was unplaced. Gary Stevens, who has won the race twice before, rides. A son of red hot sire, Giant's Causeway, his dam is a half sister to India's champion sire, Placerville.

SCRAPPY T: An impressive winner of the Withers last time out. He was a well beaten third behind Bellamy Road and Survivalist in the Wood Memorial previously. Winner of the Count Fleet Stakes in January, he was beaten by Derby also ran Sort It Out in the Whirlaway Stakes. A gelding by Fit To Fight, he is one of the outsiders here.

SUN KING: Been disappointing at his last two starts. Winner of the Tampa Bay Derby, he was third in last year's Breeders Cup Juvenile. Bids to emulate his sire, Charismatic, who won this race in 1999. Was 15th in the Kentucky Derby last time out.

WILKO: Has not won since winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year, but has not been disgraced. Sixth in the Kentucky Derby, he beat Giacomo when he was third in the Santa Anita Derby. The small chestnut is drawn at nine.
