Smarty Jones, one of America's most beloved horses, was recently represented by his first foal.
The bay filly, born on Tuesday, was produced by Danzig mare Shoppingwithbetty at Stone Farm. Shoppingwithbetty, out of GR1 winner Buy The Firm, is a descendant of blue hen mare Bourtai.
Smarty Jones, who lost once in nine starts, currently stands at Three Chimneys Farm for $100,000. The horse, named champion three-year-old colt in 2004, won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes but was defeated by Birdstone in the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont turned out to be his last race before injury forced his retirement.
Smarty covered 116 mares in his first book-one was high-class filly Solvig (Caerleon). Solvig sold at Keeneland yesterday for $950,000-in foal to Smarty Jones.
