THE YALUMBA STAKES 7 October 2005 |
| Greys Inn makes his Australian
debut on Saturday in the ten furlong Yalumba Stakes. He takes on a strong field and will have to be at his best to win. FIELDS OF OMAGH: Former Cox Plate winner, he was also second last
year at Moonee Valley to the retired Savabeel. GREYS INN: Top class performer, he was unlucky last time out in Hong Kong. Beaten into second by Derby winner Vengeance of Rain he had a high-class field behind him. He was not disgraced previously when fourth in the Dubai Sheema Classic. Uses this as a prep for the Cox Plate. PERLIN: Dual Gp1 winner. The son of Carnegie won a good race in the Underwood Stakes over Our Smoking Joe and classic winner Justa Tad last time out. He had the favourite Confectioner beaten over four lengths on that occasion with Hollow Bullet further down the field. A consistent sort, the gelding has been in the money in 10 of 14 starts, winning eight. CONFECTIONER: One of Australia's up-and coming horses, he ran a cracker behind Makybe Diva and Lad of the Manor last time out. He was beaten just a length on that occasion over ten furlongs in the Turnbull Stakes last week. He does have ground to find on Perlin however and it remains to be seen if he is up to winning at this level. A grandson of Sunday Silence, Confectioner has won eight of 19 to date. LACHLAN RIVER: Top-class three-year-old, he won last season's Queensland Derby. He won his last two starts, including a handicap at his last start, carrying 59 kgs. The son of Desert King defeated Oaks winner Vitesse Dane in the Derby by three parts of a length. He faces his toughest task to date. EL SEGUNDO: Lightly raced winner of five of nine. His biggest win
came last time out in a listed race over ten furlongs. Prior to that
he was fourth to Lad of the Manor, Makybe Diva and Fields of Omagh.
As a lightly raced four-year-old he looks open to improvement. HOLLOW BULLET: Former VRC Oaks (Gp1) winner. She has been unplaced in her last four starts and needs to improve to feature here. She has won six of 21. IRISH DARLING: Like Hollow Bullet she needs to improve on recent form. A dual Oaks winner-in Australasian and South Australia Oaks- she made improvement in her last start but was still beaten nearly seven lengths by the useful We Can't Say That. SELECTION |
