WRAP OF THE WEEKEND'S
RACING

(Media Release)
23 June 2003

Owners and breeders, Roy and Gladys Meaker, have been staunch supporters of racing in KwaZulu-Natal for many years and yesterday their three-year-old Jallad gelding, Golden Moment, gave the couple a golden moment in the limelight at Scottsville Racecourse when he won the R100 000, Listed, KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1600.

The Meaker name has been connected to many good horses over the years and it is fitting that the son of the Dancing Champ mare, Conzonet, should acknowledge their contribution to the industry with such a fine win.

Trained by Geoff Woodruff and ridden by Peter Dillon, the gelding was easy to back at 14-1 as runners like Tamarino Bay and Stellite drew the attention of the punters.

The race was run in course record time of 95,35 secs which adds even more to the quality of the win as the gelding was outpaced in the early stages but stayed on strongly in the finish to upstage Stellite and Tamarino Bay in a very close finish.

Dillon said after the race that he considered this to be a very good horse who he felt would go on to win more races and commented that it was a special win for him in the sense that he had won on the gelding’s mother, Canzonet, some years back.

Geoff Woodruff paid tribute to Dillon’s ride on Golden Moment in the manner he had ridden to instructions and persevered with the gelding right through to the line.

Alec Laird’s Fard gelding, Stellite, showed that he could stay the 1 600 metres and ran on from some way back in the early running to run a great second. Tamarino Bay, trained by Selvan Moodley and ridden by Anthony Delpech, came from the tail of the field to run third ahead of Mambo Number Five which gave, notice that he was back on form.
