FIRST WINNER FOR SURGING RIVER

Surging River was represented by his first winner when the 2yo filly Surging Star won at Arlington on Friday. The Nic Claassen trained filly produced a fine turn of foot to beat Cafe Society in a thrilling finish.

Surging River was a top-class racehorse, who won the With Approval Stakes and ran fourth to Horse of the Year Soaring Free in the Gr1 Atto Mile Stakes. He has a great pedigree.
His sire, Gone West, was a Gr1 winner who has proved to be an outstanding sire. His stakes winners include Commendable (Belmont Stakes), Da Hoss (Breeders Cup Mile twice) and Johar (Breeders Cup Turf). A great sire of sires, Gone West’s top sire sons include Zafonic, Elusive Quality, Western Winter, Speightstown, Mr Greeley, Grand Slam and Zamindar (sire of Zarkava).

Surging River is out of Classic Slew, a daughter of Triple Crown winner and champion sire Seattle Slew. Classic Slew’s dam, No Class, is one of the great mares in the modern stud book. Her descendants include Champion sire Smart Strike, Dance Smartly, Gr1 winner Always A Classic and champion Regal Classic.

Surging River is closely related to top sires Strike Smartly and Smart Strike.
