KAPIL RETIRED Former KZN Guineas winner Kapil has been retired. The Jallad gelding will spend his days at Arc-En-Ciel stud. A top-class performer, Kapil was trained by Stan Elley, although he briefly spent time with Mike de Kock when he raced overseas. He was unbeaten at two, when his wins included the Somerset Plate. At three, Kapil proved himself to be the best miler of his generation, winning the Gr2 KZN Guineas, and running second in the Gold Challenge. Sent to Dubai, Kapil won the Listed Zabeel Mile and also ran with great credit in the Gr2 Al Fahdi Fort (3rd) and the Dubai Duty Free (5th). Sent to Britain, Kapil was unable to recapture his best form and returned to South Africa. Back home, Kapil put up a very classy display when beating the Gr1 winner Villandry comfortably in the Gr2 Merchants Stakes. He was also twice placed in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate behind the mighty Pocket Power. Kapil, whose dam, Outstanding Star, was a top-class racefilly herself, won eight races and over R2.4 million in prize money. By Sarah Whitelaw
