FEATURE RACE DOUBLE FOR THE UNITED STATES

31 Oct 2022 10:47

Just one day after his son Khaya’s Hope claimed the Listed Racehorse Owners Association Stakes at Fairview, Moutonshoek’s inform stallion The United States came up with another feature race winner when his classy daughter Sheela defied top weight to win Saturday’s Listed The Citizen Golden Loom Handicap (1000m) at Turffontein.
Her sire’s very first winner, and stakes winner, Sheela had to lug 60.5 kgs in Saturday’s R175 000 sprint feature but she proved well up to the task.
Under the inform S’Manga Khumalo, Sheela was always travelling strongly in the 2022 Golden Loom Handicap and, when asked the question, she kicked on nicely in the closing stages to win a shade cosily by nearly three-parts of a length.
Trained by Michael and Adam Azzie, four-year-old Sheela is owned by her breeder Drakenstein Stud.
From the first crop of The United States, Sheela has now won four of just nine starts with the filly’s earlier triumphs including the 2021 G24Racing SA Nursery and Listed Storm Bird Stakes.

Runner up in the Listed Topbet Spring Spree Stakes last time out, Sheela has now won or placed in seven stakes races, having finished second in the 2021 running of the Golden Loom Handicap.
Her sire The United States continues to make waves as a stallion. Currently, the blue blooded son of Galileo ranks fifth on South Africa’s Leading Sires of 3YOs list, with The United States ahead of such notable sires as What A Winter, Vercingetorix and Flower Alley.

The United States has made a striking start with his second crop of runners made up of 49 runners, of which 19 have won and this crop includes the stakes winner Khaya’s Hope as well as G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes runner up Sun Blushed. The latter holds an entry for Sunday’s Listed Model Man Mile
