However, One Stripe ran on again well and was beaten five lengths by the winner Notable Speech. The latter won both the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas and G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes in 2024.

Gimme A Nother wows in John C. Mabee
South African champion Gimme A Nother made a big impression when she won the G2 John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday. The 5-year-old bay was well-positioned throughout by leading rider Juan Hernandez, then fired in the lane to come away a length and a quarter winner in the nine-furlong turf test. She picked up a check for $150,000 from the gross purse of $252,000 to increase her career earnings to $425,773 with her eighth win in her 12th start.
“She (assistant Clapham) told me she’s a really nice filly. She told me she can run from behind the pace; you can do whatever you want with her,” said Hernandez.
“Around the turn she was getting out a little bit and the #4 (favorite Medoro) horse was getting a little close to me. So, I was just trying to get in a good position and save ground. As soon as the horse ahead of me stepped out a little bit, around the quarter pole, that’s when she took off.”
Prior to Saturday, Gimme A Nother, unbeaten in seven starts in South Africa, had finished runner-up in all of the G2 Hillsborough Stakes, G3 Modesty Stakes and G2 Canadian Stakes.
The same day, another South African star, Beach Bomb, contested the G3 Light & Wonder Ladies Marathon Invitational Stakes at Kentucky Downs, but the dual G1 winner could only finish sixth.

No joy for Beach Bomb, Isivunguvungu
South African racing fans had little to celebrate in North America this past Saturday.
Dual South African G1 winner Beach Bomb could only finish fifth in Saturday’s G2 Beverly D Stakes at Colonial Downs, while former Equus Champion Sprinter Isivunguvungu was beaten three lengths when unplaced on the same card.
After making a mild bid near the furlong pole, Beach Bomb flattened out to be beaten just over three lengths by the victorious Charlene’s Dream. It is the first time in 2025 that Beach Bomb has missed finishing first or second.
Dual G1 winner Isivunguvungu, and Beach Bomb’s stablemate, could only manage sixth place in Saturday’s Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs.
After suffering a wide trip through much of Saturday’s five and a half furlong contest, Isivunguvungu had to settle for sixth place.

His connections had the following to say about their champion:
It took a while for him to get over his trip to Dubai and hopefully the race at Monmouth has moved him forward. He has done well in the last three weeks and seems more like his old self. Quite a few of the horses in this race ran in Kentucky last weekend. It is great to have John Velazquez on board. The whole of South Africa will be shouting him home, and we hope for a promising performance!

BEACH BOMB GOES IN BEVERLY D STAKES
South African star Beach Bomb is one of six runners carded to contest the G2 Beverly D Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday.
Owned by Cayton Park Stud and trained by Graham Motion, Beach Bomb is by Lancaster Bomber, out of Beach Beauty. Already this season, she has visited the winner’s circle after a 1 3/8-mile tour of Gulfstream Park‘s lawn in the March 1 The Very One Stakes (G3T) and a subsequent 1 1/2-mile journey there, annexing the March 29 Orchid Stakes (G3T). She has run strong seconds since in the Sheepshead Bay Stakes (G3T) at 1 3/8 miles and in the New York Stakes (G1T), missing by just a half-length to She Feels Pretty in that effort, also at 1 3/16 miles.
“She has really come around,” Motion noted. “She is extremely determined, yet is the kindest mare to train. She is very talented, and I give (regular rider) Luis Saez credit for that, because he has really figured her out. Beach Bomb is relatively small, but beautifully put together. The key to a distance horse is its ability to relax. They must have that in their disposition, or else they’re going to be in trouble.

Fellow South African champion Gimme A Nother was also in action this weekend. The champion daughter of Gimmethegreenlight put up another fine effort when runner-up in the G2 Canadian Stakes Presented by the Japan Racing Association at Woodbine on Sunday.

Gimme A Nother remained tough, however, Ready for Shirl drew closer with each stride, catching the front runner in the final jump to eke out the win.

Ridden by Javier Castellano, the favourite showed plenty of heart but was outkicked late, with Bellezza powering home to defeat Beach Bomb by a length and a half.
