The classy South African bred Egyptian Mau is one of nine runners entered for the G3 Las Cienegas Stakes.
The Las Cienegas is scheduled to be run as the eighth race at Santa Anita on Sunday.
Won previously by such top-class fillies and mares as Belvoir Bay, Mizdirection, Etoile Montante and Heat Haze, the Las Cienegas will be run over six and a half furlongs on the turf.
Trained by Neil Drysdale, Egyptian Mau gets the services of Mike Smith on Sunday.
Egyptian Mau will be making her fourth start in North America on Sunday, with the mare having won at Santa Anita last time out.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Egyptian Mau won two of eight starts in South Africa, notably the 2023 G3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes. The latter race saw Egyptian beat such high-class performers as White Pearl, Let’s Go Now and Leaving Las Vegas.
The mare hails from the first crop of leading young stallion Fire Away, with Egyptian Mau one of eight runners from this crop to have either won or been placed in black type races.
Fire Away’s second crop proved even more successful, with this crop responsible for the G1 winners Confederate and Fire Attack. The latter, who has earned more than R2.2 million in prize money, is a runner in Saturday’s G1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate.
