LEMON DROP KID DIES

Classic winner and millionaire Lemon Drop Kid, champion older horse of 2000, has died at the age of 28 at Lane’s End Farm. 

The precocious colt, who was trained by Flint S. “Scotty” Schulhofer, gave notice of big things to come while winning the Grade 1 Futurity Stakes and placing in the G1 Champagne Stakes at age two. In his sophomore season, he was victorious in an epic renewal of the Belmont Stakes and followed his classic victory with a win in the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga. At age four, he swept the storied G1 Whitney Handicap, G1 Woodward Stakes, G2 Suburban Handicap and G2 Brooklyn Handicap, and earned Eclipse Award honors as champion older horse. 

Lemon Drop Kid was a prolific sire of 109 stakes winners both on the dirt and turf, including 10 G1 winners and 52 graded stakes winners overall. He has sired two champions and his progeny earnings stand at over $115 million.  

Lemon Drop Kid’s top runners include Lemon Pop, current runner in Japan; winner of the G1 Champions Dirt Cup and champion dirt horse in Japan with over $5 million in earnings; Lemons Forever, winner of the Kentucky Oaks; Beach Patrol, multiple G1 stakes winner of over $2.5 million; Richard’s Kid, winner of two editions of the G1 Pacific Classic etc., Somali Lemonade, winner of the G1 Diana Stakes; multiple GSW Da Big Hoss and multiple GSW Cosmonaut.
