EPSOM CLASSIC DOUBLE FOR GALILEO

06 Jul 2020 09:22

The world’s premier sire Galileo had another remarkable this weekend, with Galileo’s daughter Love landing Saturday’s G1 Investec Oaks and his son Serpentine making all to win the same day’s Investec Derby.

Just over an hour after Love’s nine length victory in the Oaks, Emmet McNamara sent recent impressive Curragh maiden winner Serpentine to the front of the field of fifteen. Picking up the pace with five furlongs left to race, the chesnut was shaken up two furlongs later and stayed on well all the while to win by five and a half lengths.

A delighted McNamara said after the race, “I had a huge amount of confidence in Serpentine having spoken to Aidan during the week. He told he to give him a breather around the six-furlong mark and then to keep building to that winning post because the horse would keep going, thank God he was right.”

Like Love, Serpentine was bred by Coolmore and is owned by Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. His triumph sees fellow Derby hero Galileo become the winning-most sire of the Epsom Derby, his other winners being New Approach, Australia, Ruler Of The World and Anthony Van Dyck.

Serpentine also becomes the fourth Group winner produced by Epsom Oaks second Remember When (Danehill Dancer), with all of her progeny being by the great Galileo. A two-year-old full-brother to Serpentine is in training with Aidan O’Brien and holds an entry in next year’s Epsom Derby.
