MASTERY OFF THE MARK

Up Her Sleeve  became the first winner for freshman sire Mastery   when she captured a $51,000 maiden race in the first race at Gulfstream Park July 17.

Making her second career start and racing about 7 1/2 furlongs on turf, the Kent Sweezey trainee stalked the pace in third before taking command and pulling clear by 1 1/4 lengths. She paid $41.40 to win, timed covering the distance in 1:31.20 on firm turf under Wilmer Garcia.

The winner was bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds and Bridlewood Farm.

Mastery, a son of Candy Ride  , stands at Claiborne Farm for $25,000.

After capping a 3-for-3 season at 2 with a victory in 2016 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity (G1), Mastery made one more start at 3, winning the San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. As he galloped out, the colt was pulled up by jockey Mike Smith was ultimately retired with a condylar fracture.
