CHARLATAN RETIRED

Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa announced June 24 the retirement from racing of multiple grade 1 winner Charlatan , who will take up stud duty at the farm’s newly restored stallion complex near Paris, Ky.

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, the imposing son of 2004 Eclipse champion sprinter Speightstown   is out of multiple grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner Authenticity. He was trained by Bob Baffert.

Charlatan broke his maiden at first asking Feb. 16 of his sophomore year, winning a six-furlong maiden special weight at Santa Anita Park by 5 3/4 lengths in 1:08.85. His brilliance continued in his next start in which he won a one-mile allowance optional claimer by 10 1/4 lengths. He jumped next into grade 1 competition in the Arkansas Derby (G1), where he wired a division of the important Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) prep race by six lengths. Charlatan’s Arkansas Derby win was initially disqualified following a positive test for lidocaine, but the Arkansas Racing Commission restored the win following testimony that led credence to possible contamination from a pain-patch worn by an assistant trainer and questions raised about the chain of custody for the post-race samples taken.

Charlatan would validate his grade 1 status later in the seven-furlong Runhappy Malibu Stakes (G1), which he won by a widening 4 1/2 lengths in 1:21.50. He made one start at 4 in the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) where he ran a gallant second to Mishriff . Charlatan retires with a bankroll of $4,047,200.
